FC: The Slave Trade
The Transatlantic slave trade was one of the largest mass movements of humans imaginable. Occuring over roughly 400 years from the 16th century to the 19th it involved the transportation of roughly 11-20 million people as slaves from Africa to the Americas. This trade had a disastrous effect on Africa as a whole.
Slavery had been a factor in Africa long before the arrival of Europeans. Slaves were often captured and used by their fellow Africans or in other cases were used by Arabs who moved south. Unlike the Atlantic slave trade slaves were typically treated with more respect. As Europeans began to move into Africa they realized they could use the inhabitants as slaves for the plantations of tobacco and sugar in the Americas. This was the beginning of the TransAtlantic slave trade.
The Results were disastrous for Africa as a whole. in addition to the slavers attacking them many tribes began to attack one another to get more slaves to sell. Leading to large amounts of civil strife and violence
In addition slavery led to widespread depopulation. Countless small villages disappeared and major cities lost many citizens as they fled to the countryside to escape slavers. In addition since slavers often took the healthiest and strongest people this led to the loss of people who could tend to crops leading to famine and further depopulation.
In the end slavery has caused many of the issues that have plagued Africa. Allowing the exploitation of the continent and keeping it underdeveloped. Lets hope that one day all of the issues stemming from slavery are resolved.
