FC: "The Great Depression"

Many people ask "what caused the Great Depression?" Well, the biggest factor was the stock market crash. Many people got nervous with rising interest rates and sold all their stock which made investors lose their confidence which made prices plunge. The other factors were Bank failures, not buying outside the U.S., economic policy with Europe, and drought .

You are probably thinking "how long would a bad thing like this would last?" Well, It started in 1929 and last affects were still there until 1941which began another war for the U.S.

Living in the depression was very hard. Many people didn't have enough food for one meal. Also many people lived in their car because many got kicked out of their houses . Many places made of scraps and pieces of metal were called "hoovervilles". Also every single day the soup kitchens were always packed to the last man.

The Great Depression affected everyone. Many college grad, and even men who had years of experience could never find work. Also many farmers lost their land because they could not pay back the banks. It even affected kids. Many kids only had one meal a day or none because it could be their brothers turn to eat.

The Great Depression was very difficult, and last a long time, but their was an end. It started with the president doing public work programs for physical labor. By training unskilled men to work on machine, radio, and engines. It didn't solve it,but it did help. What really did it was WWII. We started trading with Europe again because they needed supplies for the war. By 1941 all of the affects from the Depression were gone. Many people were working for the "war cause". Mobilizing the United States Military before entering the war.
