S: The Hunger Games

FC: The Hunger Games | Morphology by: Damarius Wheeler

THE Call | Katniss is literally called to the District's square where the reaping takes place. Kids twelve to eighteen years old gather in the square to here which one of them will be summoned to the Hunger Games. One girl and one boy is summoned from each District every year. Katniss' younger sister, Prim, is called to participate in the Hunger Games, but Katniss refuses to let her do so and takes her place. This is when Katniss' is literally called and must began to embark on her journey (Collins 16).

The Supernatural Aid | As Katniss embarks on her journey, she is welcomed by her mentor, Haymitch. She is told that he will be her mentor for the Hunger Games. Even though Haymitch is not supernatural, he is still considered an "Aid" because he guides Katniss and helps her train for the Hunger Games. He also gives her advice on how to win the Hunger Games and how to survive alone. Even when she is in the Hunger Games, he sends her parachutes of food (Collins 48).

Crossing The First Threshold | Technically, the first Threshold in which Katniss crosses is when she gets to the Capitol of Panem. Katniss and her fellow tribute, Peeta Mallark, run to the windows when the train has stopped and they stare out into the magnificience of the Capitol, a complete upscale of their District. Katniss spends a great amount of time here preparing for the games and adjusting to how different the Capitol is from her old District, which is extremely poor. At the Capitol, she is able to indulge in delicious foods and to see the beautiful lights of the city where as the only thing she could do at home is hunt in the forest with her friend, Gale (Collins 59).

Crossing The Second Threshold | The Second Threshold Katniss crosses is when she arrives to the Hunger Games. This is when she is really cut off from the world and loses all communication of the "old world" in which she was safe. The Hunger Games are taken place in a rural area where forest are dominate. The world will be able to see her as the games are displayed on TV, but she won't be able to see them in any way. Now she is forced to fight the other tributes from the other Districts to the death in order to survive and return home. If she does not put up a fight, she could die instantly (pretty gruesome). As she enters the arena she says: "I'm in darkness and then into the open air. For a moment, my eyes are dazzled by the bright sunlight...then I hear the legendary announcer...'Ladies and Gentlemen, let the games begin!'" (Collins 147).

The Road Of Trials | An example of a "Trial" that Katniss had to face was when she was forced to protect herself from a gang of tributes. Katniss had to use her intelligence to get rid of a group of tributes that blocked her exit from a tree she climbed. With no way to get down without being instantly attacked, she finds a wasp nest above her (how she found it will be further discussed in "The Meeting With The Goddess"). These wasp are different from the ordinary wasp in which their name is "Tracker Jackers". They were spawned in a lab of the Capitol and they are much larger than normal wasp. These wasp are able to kill someone with one sting (Collins 185). Katniss knocks down the nest on the tributes which either kills them or injures them. The injured tributes run away while the dead ones are captured by the aircraft that picks up the dead bodies (Collins 190). This is one of the first times that she takes her stand and fights back instead of hiding.

Meeting With The Goddess | Katniss meets a little girl in the Hunger Games named Rue. Rue is Katniss' only ally throughout the book (until Katniss reunites with Peeta which will be further discussed in the "Apotheosis"). The way Katniss knew to look up to find the wasp nest was because Rue signaled to her to look up while Rue was in a tree directly in front of the one Katniss was in. Rue helped to save Katniss from what could've been her death (Collins 185). Rue doesn't give Katniss anything tangible, but instead gives her something to fight for. Rue reminds Katniss of her sister Prim, and when Rue dies, Katniss is in complete shock and mourns her death. Katniss is then determined to be the last one standing. Not only for herself, but for Rue and her younger sister Prim (Collins 233 - 237).

Apotheosis | Katniss eventually reunites with her District Tribute, Peeta, and decides to work with him in order to win the games. She needs sponsors to give her gifts during the game such as food. Katniss and Peeta have created a love story for eachother in order for them to be seen differently by the audience. Katniss wonders why Haymitch isn't sending them any gifts until Katniss and Peeta have an affectionate moment and kiss. She learns that feeding this love scenario is how she will get more sponsors. At that moment Katniss says: "Haymitch couldn't be sending me a clearer message. One kiss equals one pot of broth" (Collins 261).

The Refusal of the Return | Earlier in the book, an announcer announced that there would be a new rule to the game. Two tributes may live if and only if they come from the same District. When it comes down to Katniss, Peeta, and another boy named Cato, Cato is defeated by a pack of wolves that were genetically created from the corpses of the previous tributes that died. When Katniss and Peeta think they have won the games, the same announcer announces that they have changed the rule again and that only one tribute may live now. Katniss and Peeta create a plan in which they both will sacrifice themselves, a contradiction from the actual point of the games which is that one person should live and win. This is seen as "The Refusal of the Return" because they are both willing to sacrifice their lives for eachother and to not return home, but instead die for eachother (Collins, 344). Fortunately, once again the same announcer announces something else. He announces, "Stop! Stop! Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to present the victors of the Seventy-fourth Hunger games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark! I give you - the tributes of District Twelve!" (Collins 345).

Master of Two Worlds | In the beginning, she could barely answer a question from Caesar Flickerman, the Hunger Games interviewer. Now, going through this experience, she is able to have more confidence and understands things she didn't understand before. Such as how to protect and defend herself. Also, she understands her relationship with Peeta which was not as strong as it was before the Hunger Games. She has also developed new skills and sharpened her old skills which were put to the test while she was in the Hunger Games. Now Katniss Everdeen is a better Hunter and never has to return to the Hunger Games again. Now she is free and can go home where she is now seen as an hero (Collins 361).
