1: Setting | The story takes place in Europe. It begins in Paris, France but moves to Spain for the rest of the novel. In the Spanish towns of Burguete and Pamplonam is where most of the action takes place.

3: Other Characters | - Bill Gorton - Mike Campbell - Pedro Romero
4: Jake Barnes
5: Jake Barnes is the main character. He is an American journalist living in Paris. He fought and was wounded and paralyzed during World War 1. He is in love with Brett Ashley but she has moved on because of his injury.
6: Lady Brett Ashley | Brett Ashley is a retired nurse and an old friend of Jake. She is very promiscuous and causes most of the conflict in the novel.
7: Robert Cohn | Robert Cohn is a rich, insecure, Jewish writer. He was a boxer in college. He is in love with Brett and is a friend of Jake. He is nice but disliked by most.
8: Minor Characters | - Bill Gorton- is an old friend of Jake's who is also a war veteran. He is funny, and liked by most. - Mike Campbell - is Brett's current fiance. He is a bankrupt, drunk, European war veteran - Pedro Romero - is a nineteen year old bullfighter. Brett soon falls in love with him, after they meet.
9: - | Conlfict | The main conflict in The Sun Also Rises is that Brett and Jake love each other, but they can't be together. This causes tensions with all of the other characters, especially Cohn and Mike, who both have feelings for Brett.
10: Summary | - The story starts off in Paris with Cohn trying to convince Jake to go to South America with him. Jake gets annoyed, showing that nobody really likes Cohn. - While at a club one night, Jake runs into Lady Brett Ashley. They love each other, but because of Jake's injury she won't be with him. - Cohn starts to fall in love with Brett, but is upset when he finds out that she is engaged to another man, Mike Campbell. - Jake's old friend, Bill comes to Paris. - Jake, Bill, and Cohn go to Spain on a fishing trip. Cohn does not actually go fishing but instead waits for Mike and Brett.
11: - Jake, Bill, Cohn, Mike, and Brett all arrive in Pamplona, Spain for the bullfight fiesta. - Brett falls in love with the young bullfighter named Pedro Romero - Cohn attacks Jake, Mike, and Romero - After Romero's final bullfight, he and Brett go to Madrid - Jake meets Brett in Madrid after he gets a letter from her saying that she needs him. We find out that Brett and Romero break up - While driving through Madrid, Brett says that she and Jake could have had a wonderful time together. Jake responds, “Yes, isn’t it pretty to think so?” -
12: Symbols | - Bulls in The Sun Also Rises are a symbol of passion, strength, energy, and freedom - The bullfights foreshadow the fights with Cohn, Jake, Mike, and Romero. - Water is a symbol of purification and relief. When Jake is fishing he is relaxed and calm unlike when he is around Brett and the others
13: Theme | The theme in The Sun Also Rises is based upon "the Lost Generation". The Lost Generation was a term used to describe the veterans of WW1. These veterans feel lost and dis-illusioned after dealing with the hardship of the war. Trust, happiness, love, and faith had been lost. The characters in this novel that represent actual veterans, like Jake, have trouble finding love and happiness.
