FC: Tim Evans 8th period, Tier 2 A B C Book Chapter 7

1: A Absolutism- a system in which a ruler holds total power

2: B Boyars - a Russian nobility surrounding the grand prince and ruled the country with him; drawn from around 200 families descending from former princes.

3: C Commonwealth- a republic or an organized political community

4: D Divine right of kings- kings who believed they receive power from God

5: E Exclusion Bill- a bill that would have barred James from the throne

6: F French culture- something that was extremely important to the French during this time

7: G government- something that Louis many of the kings cherished and needed

8: H House of Lords- declared England a republic and it was the upper house of Parliament made up of nobility and high ranking people

9: I Inflation- rising prices; major economic problem in Europe from 1560 to 1660 caused by an influx of gold and silver from the Americas

10: J James I- King of England believed he was a servant of God and Jesus Christ

12: L- Louis XIV- known as Louis the Great or the Sun King had one of the longest documented reigns of any European monarch

13: M- Mazarin- chief minister during Louis IV's rule was a French-Italian cardinal, diplomat, and politician

14: N- New Model Army-made up of extreme Puritans known as the Independents; believed they were doing battle for God.

15: O- Oliver Cromwell-leader of New Model Army. Victorious, Cromwell purged Parliament of members who did not support him. Had Charles I executed and declared England a commonwealth.

16: P- Phillip II- "Most Catholic King"; King of Spain; son and heir of Charles V and greatest supporter of militant Catholicism. His reign brought in an age of Spanish greatness both politically and culturally.

18: R- Cardinal Richelieu- was Louis XIII chief minister who also strengthened the power of the monarchy

19: S- | Spanish Armada-sent by King Philip II in 1588 to invade England and overthrow Protestantism; the effort failed and most ships sank before returning home to Spain

20: T- Thomas Hobbs- wrote a book called Leviathan which was a book on political thought.

22: V- | Versailles-near Paris; Louis XIV built a palace here, where life became a series of elaborate court ceremonies
