FC: this is who we are... | Tim & Kara

We are Tim and Kara, a moderately young (30), mostly fun (at least we think so!) couple. We have been married for seven years, and in that time have grown to love and appreciate one another more and more. Tim is a college professor and Kara works at our own Catholic parish, coordinating education for all of the members of the church. We enjoy reading, going for walks, watching movies, laughing, sharing meals with friends and family, going to sporting events, seeing plays, and listening to music. We are both Roman Catholic, and the ritual of prayer and worship is a vital part of our lives. Our belief in God helps us to be thankful each day for all of the beauty we encounter, to accept whatever sadness may come our way, and to focus our lives on giving and receiving love. We like to travel, and sometimes will hop in the car on a weekend day just to go explore a new town within a day’s drive. We live in a city that sometimes feels like a small town—often we’ll meet new people who already know five of our friends. We have great family (who are as excited and ready to welcome a new member of the family as we are) and lots of wonderful friends. One of our favorite things to do is play with the children of our friends and family. We are constantly amused, surprised and moved by the love of these beautiful children. We tried to conceive a child for several years, but when it became clear that was not the path for us, it was a natural choice for us to pursue adoption. We hope and trust in God that we will be blessed to share our life and love with a child, and are excited for this child to have as many loving people in his or her life as possible. We do not know you, and can not imagine what you are going through. But we do sincerely care about you, and hope that you have found the support you need to make this decision for both yourself and your child. And we hope that you will take the time to learn more about us over the next pages...

We met the summer before our senior year of college (well, if you believe Tim, we actually met a year before that, at which time Kara ignored him, but...that wasn't the official meeting, right?) and started dating within a few weeks. After a year and a half of dating, Tim proposed, Kara said yes, (he accidentally shut a car door on her hand), and the rest is history... | our story | St. Patrick's Day 2004. Can you tell Tim likes the color green?

Our wedding day was a cold, beautiful day in December. Kara spent hours at the salon and getting dressed Tim spent the morning in the hot tub. We were each walked down the aisle by both of our parents, which was really special for us. | The celebration lasted well into the evening, and is still a source of conversation for friends and family--it was a great party! And when we left the reception hall, we encountered the calm beauty of a fresh layer of snow on the ground. | our wedding | Bridesmaids looking a little cold after we made them take their coats off. | Everyone enjoyed dancing--especially the bride and groom! | Saying a prayer together.

About Tim | Words to live by... "Great are you, O Lord, and exceedingly worthy of praise; your power is immense, and your wisdom beyond reckoning. And so we human, who are a due part of your creation, long to praise you...You arouse us so that praising you may bring us joy, because you have made us and drawn us to yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you" ~St. Augustine~

Tim makes friends with everyone he meets. He can strike up a conversation with anyone, and his sense of humor and innate kindness immediately put people at ease.. He loves to read and write (which is why he is such a good college professor).and is a fantastic teacher, particularly when relating to teens (he was beloved by the kids in the youth group we ran in our former town). He is an avid sports fan, both playing and watching them. | Tim loves kids and enjoys playing with them. In return, they gravitate toward him (at a recent gathering of friends, he kept a table of seven young children laughing hysterically for the whole meal). He is a great friend to these children, who light up when he walks in the door. As a father, Tim will be patient and loving. He will be a fun, active dad who will play hard with his kids during the day and then read stories and give bear hugs at bedtime. Tim greatly values his own education, and hopes to pass on a love of learning and exploring to his own children. Tim is a considerate husband (he even does the chores I hate, like killing bugs and vacuuming). He constantly surprises me with little gestures of care. Tim is a rock for his friends and family--he cares deeply and is always ready to help out in times of need. | from Kara . . .

Tim's family is extraordinarily close-knit (his grandparents even lived with them for a time during his childhood!) He has always been well-loved by his mom, his grandparents, and his younger brother, Shaun., who encouraged, nurtured and cared for him. When he was 9, his mother met and married his stepfather, Tom. Tom became Tim's dad in every sense but the biological, and has been a constant support. Tim's family all live in another state, but they are within a day's drive so we try to see them often. They are very excited about their first grandchild, and eager to welcome another member of the family! | Tim's Family

The two of us with Tim's grandparents on our wedding day! | Tim and Shaun on a schooner ride in Maine. | Camera timer picture on Christmas Eve. Doesn't Tim look excited to have his picture taken? | Tim's parents at Christmastime.

About Kara | Words to Live by... "Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God . . . Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us." ~ 1 John 4: 7, 11-12 ~

Kara is a beautiful woman, who is an excellent friend and mentor to all those she works with. In her work at our local church, she is a model of patience and wisdom. She always seems to know the precise way to make someone feel welcome in a group. Among the children of our friends, she has become a fast playmate and trusted confidant. Whenever it is time for us to depart from a visit to a friend's house, the children express disappointment that Kara is leaving them (always wanting her to spend the night). | Kara still sees the world through the eyes of a child. She loves stories, immersing herself in books (she reads about 6 or 7 each week). As a mother, I know that one of her favorite times will be reading her favorite books to our children, passing on the imaginative world so important to Kara's own childhood memories. Kara is also the most fantastic wife a husband could have. I marvel each day that I get to come home and spend time with my best friend, who is a fabulous cook, a fantastic conversationalist, and who has made sure that our table and home is a place where all are welcome. . | From Tim . . .

Kara's Family | Kara's family is very loving and they enjoy spending time together. Her two older sisters , Kristin and Lisa, live elsewhere, but they visit often. Her parents live in the same town (her father teaches at the same university as Tim!) and are looking forward to loving and spoiling another grandchild! Since they live so close, they will also be our regular babysitters! Kara also has a large extended family--17 aunts and uncles, 26 first cousins and 2 living grandparents. We see them regularly for holidays and visits. Family, and the love and support we share, have always been of utmost importance in our lives. | Family Portrait, 2011 With Kara's Parents, sisters, brother in law, niece and nephew.

 our home

We live on a quiet cul-de-sac in a neighborhood that houses people of many different ages and backgrounds. There are lots of children who live on our street. Our house has plenty of room for our family to grow--four bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and a finished basement. We have a big, fenced in backyard that is perfect for running around, sports, and even sledding down our little hill in the winter. There is also a little waterfall (pictured left) in our backyard that attracts birds and bunnies to visit! We live 10 minutes from Kara's parents, and close to stores, schools, and parks. Our city has a good variety of cultural opportunities, fairs and events to keep us busy!

Work and Family Life We are both lucky to have work that is supportive of family life. We love our jobs, but appreciate that we have the flexibility with hours and time to be there for one another and for our future children. Kara works part time, which helps us to keep the needs of our family as the top priority and, eventually, to care for our children ourselves (with the help of family) the majority of the time. If we find that we are unable to both work and adequately support the nurturing needs of our family, we also have the financial freedom for Kara quit her job and focus full time on the family. | Kara assisting with a baptism.

Tim giving a talk to high school students. | One of the major benefits of both of our jobs are the tuition subsidies that will allow us substantial choices in providing for the education of our children. Kara's work provides subsidies for the private, Catholic elementary and high schools in our area and the university Tim works for will provide a large percentage of the yearly tuition at any university. Our own experiences of learning and exploring have been so important to us, and we want our children have similar opportunities.

Dressing up for formal dinners (just for fun!) | Our friends and the children of our friends (especially our little buddy, Caleb, who obviously takes after his godfather, Tim, in his appreciation of a good costume). | Some things we love...

Giant games of chess...but maybe not necessarily in the rain... | Pretty beaches in Maine (when you wear a coat) | Beaches (this is the California coast!) ...And Mountains (specifically, hiking up them) | Exploring new places, both near to home and far away. This is us in front of a glacier in Alaska. | Ministry, especially working with teens and young people. This is a ski trip with the kids in our high school youth group.

Our parents. | Singing fight songs, wearing athletic jerseys | Kayaking. | Hosting tea parties for little girls and their mamas | Playing around on a service trip.

Hanging out with furry creatures (and being really excited about it!) | Crazy dancing at weddings with Kara's sisters, cousins and aunt! | A friendly game of touch football with friends. | Posing like people in statues. | Hamming it up for a picture

May the Lord bless you and keep you; May he show his face to you and have mercy on you; May he shine his countenance upon you and give you peace. | Thank you for taking the time to "meet" us--we hope this book has given you some idea of who we are. We'll be praying for you on the journey ahead!
