FC: Native Americans | Katie

2: The lifestyles of the Paleo, Archaic, and Eastern Woodlands Indians are very different because of technology advancements. The first Indians (Paleo) would have arrived 15,000-18,000 years ago by Beringia, the land bridge. They had very few tools. The next Indians (Archaic) had a new tool called the atlatl. It was a new type of spear. Finally, the Eastern Woodland Indians had the most advanced technologies, such as the bow and arrow. These are some of the Indians and there technology.

4: There are three Virginia language groups. The groups are Algonquian, Siouan and Iroquoian. The language they spoke determined the groups and their names. Thirty-two of the forty Algonquian tribes formed the Powhatans that lived mostly in the coastal plains. The Siouan lived in the Piedmont region, and groups in the tribe called the Monacan were excellent mound builders. 80,000 Iroquoians still live in America today. The three language groups were different and the same.

7: The Native Americans lives changed a lot when the English settled. A law called the racial integrity act said no white and colored people could get married, it limited colored peoples education and made no record of their heritage. Some tribes moved onto reservations such as the Mattaponi and pamunkey and these two tribes still live on the reservations. Fishing is a major industry for one those two reservations.

9: Virginia's Governor Bob McDonnell declared November Native American heritage month. He signed proclamations for each of the eleven state recognized tribes. The state government and the tribal governments are trying to improve and expand what student learn about Native Americans.
