FC: OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY VOLUME 3 | George & Charlotte Loveland July 8-28, 2009

Anniversary | Day 17, July 24...Heading down 101 toward California... | We stopped at the Trees of Mystery where we had lunch... | Crossed into California at noon Crescent City is 17 miles...

Of course, Paul Bunyan and his Blue Ox are attractions as well as the statue of the "End of the Trail"... | Stopped to visit the Trees of Mystery.. We had lunch at the restaurant across the street..."The Forest Cafe:"...not too good...

Although we had been through the park before, we enjoyed going again and marvel at the beautiful creations of God... | Stopped for the night in Eureka at 3:45, but couldn't find a suite, so drove back 9 miles to Arcata to Holiday Inn Express... 225 miles ....

Entrance... | Trees of Mystery Park... | George is always attracted to machinery... | George ready to explore...

The Trees of Mystery are so mysterious! | This trip has been full of adventures.... | Char by a fountain in the woods... | Sign's in the park...

Not sure if this is a branch or a root?

Yes, I walked under this tree!

GIANTS To someone who has never seen one, a Redwood must seem to be something from a tall tale. Averaging 8 feet to as much as 20 feet in diameter, and some as tall as 375 feet, that is a tree TALLER then the Statue of Liberty, from base of the pedestal to the tip of the torch. A tree larger around & through than a Greyhound bus...absolutely the largest living thing on earth...Huge, Majestic, Beautiful...

Super Natural Magic of the Redwoods at Klamath, California... | The fallen giant... | 320 feet...

The super natural magic of the Redwoods... | Cathedral Tree has become a popular arboreal attraction with a pulpit where weddings are often performed.

Looking up through the trees is a surreal experience... The Brotherhood Tree was named for the "hope for the brotherhood of man"...

This Redwood makes George look very small!

How awesome...the wonders of God's creations!

I love trees, and especially these redwoods!

We took the Sky Trails ride up to the top...

 the Redwoods...

 Uggghhh, I can't lift it...

"Tree hugger"! | George loves Charlotte

 George, what are you doing???

George in the "Land of Tall Tales"... Something has gotten "a hold" of him! Maybe the "little people" can help him!

George... careful....that is a pretty big grizzly...

Pooped Loggers?? I have to admit it is a good place to stop...rest...think.. Contemplating our next find maybe...or just taking a moment to meditate what a pleasant, exciting and wonderful trip this has been...!

Perfect find on our anniversary trip... | George stands beside a fallen Redwood... the signs mark times in our history when it was living.. Columbus...1492 Pilgrims ..1620 Independence ...1776 Amazing... | G.L + C.B.

Left the Trees of Mystery and headed down Hwy 101 toward Eureka...

We planned to stop for the night in Eureka, arrived at 3:45am but couldn't find a place with a suite, so we headed back toward Arcata (9 miles) and found a Holiday Inn Express...4:30pm... Went to dinner at a Mexican Restaurant called Carmella's... Made 225 miles today... | Starbucks in Eureka...my 1st in 4 days...

Detoured through the "Avenue of the Giants" - the Redwoods- which parallels 101 - 32 miles - so majestic! | A scenic & awe inspiring drive...the verse: "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--His eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse."..Romans 1:20 | God's Majestic Redwoods...

Humboldt State Park... The Avenue of the Giants... We could not believe the size of these Redwoods... Something about the woods... | Charlotte | George

This was the car just ahead of us...

We took all the turns & twists and came to the famous "drive through" tree... We tried, but our truck was too big to drive through...had to back up & just walk through...

Soooo disappointed when our truck was too big to drive through...it was just too wide! But at least we were able to get a picture of other cars driving through and us standing in the middle of it...a fun stop! Drove on down the road to another "Drive Through Tree... still couldn't get our truck through the opening...

This site was about 20 miles down the road from the other one... It was called the Chandelier Tree...

Located 175 miles north of San Francisco at the junction of US101 and Coast Hwy 1, lies the tiny hamlet of Leggett, known world wide as the home of the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree...

It has a nice park at the facility, a tourist shop for souvenirs and a place to pick up some snacks...

Continuing down Hwy 1 we stopped for lunch at Ft. Bragg around 2pm... | Looking out to the front... | We happened upon this wonderful B&B in Elk, California...right on the ocean overlooking a cove....

Pathways meander through magnificent gardens with private seating and vistas that lead to the private beach below...this was pricey but so worth it! | Built in 1916, The Harbor House Inn is the "belle" of the Redwood Empire standing vigil on a rocky cliff overlooking Greenwood Cove with its spectacular rock formations and powerful, ever changing sea... | ... | ...from our room...

The drama continues throughout the Inn's ten guest rooms, its stately sitting room and breathtaking ocean view dining room. A full breakfast and four course dinner is included...we were in the Redwood Room...

This quickly became our favorite overnight stop... we hope to go back someday...perfect for our anniversary!

Day 18 of our trip...July 25, 2009... as you can see, the views & vistas were extraordinary!! | The trip down to the private beach was amazing...a very steep twisty curvy steps & pathway... 178 miles today...

I couldn't take enough photos of this magnificent Inn and surroundings...the gardens were so breathtaking and beautiful! | This had to be one of the best finds on our trip...

 Awesome...!!

This seating overlooks the Greenwood Cove below... | We would highly recommend this Inn to anyone who wants a private, scenic, timeless luxury in the most breathtaking setting...

On the way down to the private beach below...it is not visible from the seating area above...

George enjoying the serene scenic view of Greenwood Cove...

 Misty,overcast and a little foggy...

but so enjoyable and so relaxing...

More views at the Harbor House Inn and grounds...

Dinner in the dining room with the ocean views.... | This is the view we see from the dining room... | Gorgeous and breathtaking as we relax over a glass of wine...

After dinner we sat out on one of the many private seating areas in the magnificent gardens overlooking the cove... the spots on the picture above is raindrops as it started to rain...

Our last night at Harbor House, we leave in the morning at 9am onto Hwy 1...it is very overcast and misty/foggy...

Loved the Tsunami warning signs...George looks a little worried... We ate down on the pier for dinner at the Mezza Luna...very good!

Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero... Perched on a cliff it is one of the tallest lighthouses in American and has been guiding mariners since 1872...

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse is 50 miles south of San Francisco, it was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872... The day was really overcast, cold and misty, but clear enough to view the lighthouse and surroundings... This time of the year isn't the best for traveling down Hwy 1 as it tends to be quite foggy most of the time... Next stop...17 mile drive at Monterey, Carmel by the Sea...

As we were doing the 17 mile drive, I was posting some pictures on FB, and received a call from Scott Yeh...they were in the vicinity and just getting ready to take the same drive...amazing!

Scott & Alison made arrangements to meet up with us when we returned home to Escondido... what a strange coincidence... While we have done the 17 mile drive in the past, we still thoroughly enjoyed it again!

We stopped for lunch at Carmel by the Sea... The celebration of our anniversary continues...

After leaving Carmel by the Sea we headed for Morro Bay where we would stay for the night at the Ascot Suites...

Day 20, July 27...the drive to Morro Bay was so gorgeous, and the fog had lifted so we could really enjoy the view...love the scenic drive along Hwy 1...

Piedras Blancas Lighthouse is located on San Simeon Bay...

Our room at the Ascot Suites...

Arrived in Morro Bay, 4pm...foggy weather had already began to set in...The most distinctive landmark associated with Morro Bay is the famous Morro Rock, which we couldn't see because of the fog! 220 miles today...

Signs of Morro Bay... | Lunch at the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara...

Left Morro Bay at 8:30am... heading to Santa Barbara on Hwy 1... Arrived around noon and had lunch at the Four Seasons Biltmore, right on the beach... Fabulous! | We took a walk along the beach front and stop to take a few pictures... Santa Barbara is one of our favorite beach cities...

After leaving Santa Barbara, back on Hwy 1 along the Pacific Coastline, passing Malibu Beach, Redondo Beach, & Huntington Beach... We stopped in Laguna Beach for dinner and resting and relaxing before heading the rest of the way home....

We stopped in Laguna Beach for dinner...ate at the Greeter! We sat outside on the beach and enjoyed the beautiful ocean waves...

I couldn't stand it and had to take off my shoes and play in the sand... Laguna is a gorgeous beach town...clean and inviting... I made a note to myself to return to this area for a visit...

We left Laguna at 7:30pm and headed for home on I5 via Dana Point... 330 miles today....

Arrived home after 3 weeks of travel & 5,175 miles! My roses from our anniversary made it all the way too! Good to be home but what a wonderful trip!
