About J. Michael Smith: For the past three years I have worked as an organic farmer at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre, growing food for about a thousand people each year. I am on the land at all hours of the day, in all types of weather, working with my fellow farmers and interns. This opportunity has allowed me to capture beautiful moments in nature throughout the seasons. | I have always been interested in the visual arts. Although I am not much of a drawer or painter, I have been told I have an eye for framing a good photo. I first picked up a camera, a Kodak Star 110, in 1987 at the age of five. I remember taking a photograph of a squirrel outside our dining room sliding glass door. To my surprise, the developed photo was a reflection of my self taking the picture. While I did not understand why this happened at the time, the experience triggered in me a lasting passion for photography. I became an organic farmer from the desire to help make positive social change in my community - building a healthier food system one seed at a time. I think that when people eat good food, they are better prepared to make good decisions. The following pages give you a look at both the beauty of the Ignatius Farm and of the fruits of our labour in the fields. I hope you enjoy them.

“In nature's economy the currency is not money, it is life.” -Vandana Shiva
“But I'll tell you what hermits realize. If you go off into a far, far forest and get very quiet, you'll come to understand that you're connected with everything." -Alan Watts
“The soil is the great connector of lives, the source and destination of all. It is the healer and restorer and resurrector, by which disease passes into health, age into youth, death into life. Without proper care for it we can have no community, because without proper care for it we can have no life.” -Wendell Berry
COMMUNITY SHARED AGRICULTURE is a farm business model in which members of a community purchase a "share" in the farm's harvest during the winter before the season begins. This allows the farm to have enough capital early in the season when expenses are highest. Shareholders acknowledge the risk that is inherent in agriculture as a result of the variability in weather from year to year. They agree to share both the risk and the bounty with the farm. CSA farms grow a wide variety of produce each year to ensure that the farm will have a bountiful harvest regardless of the weather. Ignatius Farm & CSA has been in operation since 2001 and has been a leader in farm training. Each season the farmers hire interns and train them in all the steps required to grow organic vegetables and run a small farm business. As of 2012 Ignatius Farm has trained over 60 interns, feeds about 1000 people a year, and donates over 1000lbs of produce per year to those in need in the Guelph Area.
“The only truly dependable production technologies are those that are sustainable over the long term. By that very definition, they must avoid erosion, pollution, environmental degradation, and resource waste. Any rational food-production system will emphasize the well-being of the soil-air-water biosphere, the creatures which inhabit it, and the human beings who depend upon it.” -Eliot Colemen
