2: About this book ~ The dragonflies found on the following pages were photographed at Edith’s parents near Big Cabin, OK, Oxley Nature Center north of the Tulsa Zoo, and at Coyote Hill on Mom and Dad’s land west of Chelsea, OK. Most of the pictures were not taken near large water sources. Many were taken in fields. Dragonflies are enjoyable to photograph. Most enjoy basking in the sun on the tips of dead stemmy stalks of grass or weeds. If you approach them too fast they will usually fly a short distance but will return to the same stem if they do not feel threatened. Some are very territorial. They fly back and forth over the same 30 yards like they are on guard duty. When another dragonfly ventures into their territory they quickly dart over like a fighter pilot to intercept their enemy. I have photographed them as early as March and as late as the third week of November. The largest of the species are often seen in the heat of the summer whereas the smaller ones I have photographed in late fall. Dragonflies are beautiful to watch in nature but are just as spectacular when you look at their photographs. I hope you enjoy the following pages as much as I enjoy taking their pictures and put these pages together. I would like to say a big thanks to Mom and Dad for assisting in the purchase of my fabulous camera equipment and providing such a spectacular, quiet, and peaceful place in the form of the property west of Chelsea.
