FC: A to Z with Hank and Me | Written by Ashley Weems

 A to Z with Hank and Me | 2011

Ashley...that's who I am. I love my horse Hank and spending as much time as I can with him. I also love spending time being involved in the NSC, FFA, and 4-H. | A

Back roads...One of the things I love doing with Hank. We both love riding back roads to calm us down and relax us. It helps us gain trust and regain the special connection that we love and need to have. | B

C | Calendar...I love to fill my calendar with NSC, FFA, and 4-H events. | Playing basketball with younger 4-H members. | Having fun in the relay race with friends at NSC Show. | I love to cheer on FFA buddies at FFA events.

D | Down to Earth...Hank and I are both the “down to earth” types. We love to be ourselves and take it easy. Just as I enjoy talking with people, Hank seems to draw people to him.

E | Education...is very important to me and my family. This coming year I will be a junior at Peabody-Burns High School. After high school I am planning on going to Pratt Community College and get a Bachelor degree in pre-vet. I then would like to further my education by going to K-State and get a degree in veterinary medicine and then specialize in equine sport medicine.

F | FFA...is another big part of my life. This upcoming year I will be our chapter's Vice- President and the year before that I was secretary. I love FFA and strongly think it has prepared me to become a great NSC Queen.

G | Growing Trust...when I got Hank I had to learn how to gain his trust and he had to learn how to gain my trust. You see when I got Hank he had never had a bath or been fly sprayed or even really been tied up. So he had to learn that it is fine to let me teach him these things and get him used to them.

H | Hank...is my best friend. He is my beautiful sorrel five year old grade quarter horse. He teaches me something new every day while I am teaching him. He and I make a great pair and I am so glad because I don’t know what I would do without him.

I | Investment...Through the years of owning horse, I have had to put in different kinds of investments like money and time investments. From the beginning my parents urged me to try and finance this on my own. Through this I have learned a great deal of things like buying my own trailer, saddle and horses. I also put in a lot of time riding getting Hank ready for shows. I also like spending a lot of time grooming Hank and getting to know him better that way.

J | Jog...Wow, this took a lot of work! When I got Hank, all he knew how to do when trotting was a fast uncomfortable trot, but with time and effort we together have accomplished a slow, enjoyable trot that really helps him in Western Pleasure and other show events.

K | Kansas Born and Raised... With Hank and I both born and raised in Kansas, we seem to enjoy doing the same things together no matter what the weather.

L | Leadership...is a strength of mine. I enjoy helping others become the best they can be. At school, I am a Big Sister in the “Bigs in Schools” program and am a member of the National Honor Society. Last year, I was the secretary for our local FFA chapter and I’ve been elected to serve as Vice-President for next year. As a NSC member, I believe it is important for me to be a role model for others within our club and strive to make people feel welcomed at all of our events.

M | Mom...I have no clue what I would do without my mom. My mom is always there for me, definitely on show days. She supports me in anything and everything I do and has taught me many things. I don’t know what I would do without them. I love my mom and I am so glad that she is always there for me in anything I do.

N | Newton Saddle Club...means everything to me. In the Newton Saddle Club, I have attended almost all of the meetings, and this year I was involved in the Rodeo committee and the sub-committee for the Jr. Rodeo. Being on these committees has taught me a lot and has gotten me more involved in the club. After being part of these committees, I’ve wanted to be the NSC queen even more. This will help me continue to be actively involved in our club and promote it to other horse-loving people. I love the club and I think it is great for everyone because it teaches so much, to so many people.

O | Obstacles...Hank and I have had to come over many different obstacles together like getting him used to baths and fly spray. I have also had to overcome different obstacles that have gotten me to where I am today.

P | Poncho...Wow, what a goof! Poncho is my mom’s horse and Hank’s pasture bud. Poncho is a 12 year old Appaloosa. He makes us laugh and we probably wouldn’t know what to do without him. An interesting thing about Poncho is that he is the horse I took riding lessons on.

Queen...It would mean everything to me to become the Newton Saddle Club queen. When I am queen, I plan on doing whatever I can to help promote the saddle club and tell people how great it is. Also, I would love to show others how much you can learn from mentors in the saddle club. | Q

R | Roping...is what Hank and I love to do when we are not showing. It relaxes us so much and gives us much needed down time.

Showing is something that is brand-new to Hank, but he is doing really great. Many of the Newton Saddle Club members have helped Hank and me get used to shows and have helped us continue to grow and learn together. | S

Trails...This summer, my mom and I have a goal to make it to as many state parks as possible to enjoy the trails with our horses. Kanopolis State Park is one of my favorite places to ride the trails. I have ridden Poncho, my mom’s horse, there and loved it! I am excited to ride it with Hank and experience it with him. | T

U | Unforgettable...Many people say that you will have one or two horses in your lifetime that you truly connect with, Hank is that horse for me! He does what he can to please me and I do what I can to please him. He is my best friend. He will absolutely be unforgettable!

V | Variety...One of the reasons I love Hank so much is his ability to do a variety of things. I can use him for Western Pleasure class, trail rides, roping, and we are even working on halter class.

W | Women’s Ranch Rodeo Association...I enjoy watching my favorite team, “4 Branded Chicks”. One of my mentors, Billie Jo Claassen is a cowgirl on that team. She has helped me with my horsemanship skills. A goal of mine is to compete with a team at Women’s Ranch Rodeos.

X | eXcellence...Excelling in all I do has always been a goal of mine. I work hard to make sure that my horsemanship skills help Hank achieve excellence too. I attend as many clinics as possible to help me continue to learn as a rider and owner.

Y | Years...I look forward to continuing my relationship with Hank for many years to come. I am very lucky because Hank is only five years old, he and I can have a wonderful long life together. Maybe he can even still be around to help teach my kids to ride!

Z | Zippy...Although most of the time, Hank isn’t the speediest horse, but when he is tracking cows, Hank becomes very zippy! We zigzag where ever the calf goes, we go!
