S: The Higher Power of Lucky

FC: The Higher Power of Lucky By: Susan Patron Retold by: Alyssa Nelson

This is Lucky. She is 10 years old. Her mother, Lucille, wanted to have children, but Lucky's father did not. When he found out his wife was pregnant, he divorced her and left. | FAMILY PROBLEMS

When Lucky was born, she lived with only her mother, but something terrible occurred changing the relationship. When Lucky was younger, her mom died. She had been walking around outside after a rainstorm and wasn't paying attention to where she was going. She stepped, with her bare foot, onto a fallen electrical wire and was electrocuted.

 Lucky as a Baby!

After hearing about Lucille's death, Lucky's father called his first wife, Brigitte, who was currently living in France, and asked her to be Lucky's guardian, not wanting to take care of her himself. Agreeing, Brigitte flew to California.

When Brigitte arrived, she was wearing a fancy red dress. Not knowing she was moving to a desert, she stuck out.

Soon after Brigitte arrived, there was a ceremony held for Lucky's mom. Lucky received an urn with her mother's remains inside. Not understanding why she should scatter the ashes, Lucky kept the jar.

Lucky now has many friends and a paying job. Some of her closer friends are Lincoln and Short Sammy. Short Sammy loves cooking. He cooks everything in grease with bacon grease his favorite.

His latest invention is chili and Fritos. Scoop some chili into your Fritos bag, and eat!

Lincoln, on the other hand, loves knots. Tying and untying them.

Lincoln fixed this sign. He put a colon right here. | Now people will think: "Please drive slowly for there are children at play" instead of "slow children are playing."

Lincoln's mother named Lincoln after a lot of presidents. She is hoping he will some day become the president of the United States.

Another one of Lucky's friends is Miles. He is in kindergarten. Miles is always trying to get Lucky to read "Are You My Mother?" to him.

Another important character in this story is HMS Beagle. HMS Beagle is Lucky's brown dog who, weirdly enough, isn't a beagle. He is named after a beautiful ship that took a famous scientist around the world. HMS stands for "His Majesty's Ship."

The setting in the story is in Hard Pan, California. Hard Pan is a very small town with a population of only 43 people. Hard Pan is a desert. Most people live in a trailer.

Even when she's caring for Lucky, Brigitte doesn't forget her life in France. Lucky believes that sometime soon, Brigitte will abandon her and go back to France. Her French mother really wants her to come back. She sends her all kinds of French items. One that Lucky really likes is the parsley grinder.

One day, Lucky decides to run away. She gets her "Survival Backpack" ready, and heads out wearing Brigitte's red dress. There's a couple problems though. One is that Lucky got mad at Miles, and now he's disappeared! Another is that there's a bad wind storm, but these things don't hold Lucky and HMS Beagle back. They've got a plan.

As Lucky and HMS Beagle fearlessly head out into the storm, HMS Beagle stops by a pile of old rags. It turned out to be Miles! He had something in his foot though. It turned out to be a cholla burr, a type of cacti.

To flick the cholla burr out, Lucky used the parsley grinder that she had carried along.

Lucky and Miles spread out a picnic blanket in the dugouts that they were staying in.

Soon, Lucky heard footsteps coming into the dugouts.

The footsteps turned out to be Lincoln! He had come to get them. Everyone in the town had guessed that if Lucky were to run away, she would run away to the Dugouts because she talked about them so much

Everyone in the town had come to find Lucky and Miles. Lucky decided then that she had something to do.

"Thank you everyone for coming to this memorial service for my mother," she began.

Short Sammy's voice rang out singing "Amazing Grace."

Lucky then took the lid off the urn and scattered the ashes into the desert. Brigitte ran up to her and hugged her so hard.

Later, as Lucky was getting ready for bed, Brigitte came in and told her that she was going to finish the documents to legally adopt Lucky. Lucky was thrilled. Brigitte also told her what a scrotum was when she asked. It is a little sack to hold sperm from a male to make a baby.

My favorite scene is the one I just explained: the part when Brigitte tells Lucky she's going to legally adopt her. I liked this scene because it is so happy and tender. It just really made me smile.

If I were a new character in this story my name would be Katie. I'd be best friends with Lucky. We would both set out together on the trip. Both of us would be fearless adventurers!

I don't think that the story would be changed much except that I was there. I would definitely not change the end outcome.
