Mel was an average everyday flamingo. She did what all of the other flamingos did. Even though her life was good, she wanted some change.
Mel went to school everyday, but she always felt like she wasn't learning anything. She wanted to understand the history of the flamingos. But her teacher never spoke of anything of the sort.
That day after school, she decided that she was going to learn about flamingos one way or another. So she went to go visit Merlin, the wise owl of the swamp. Mel was certain that if is she was going to learn anything, Merlin would have to be her teacher.
"Hello?" Mel said. "Mr. Merlin? I need you help." With that, she saw something swoop out of the corner of her eye. "What is it, Mel? exclaimed Merlin.
"Whataya know about flamingos, sir?" she asked. "A fair amount... Why? he answered. "I need you to teach me. My teachers never speak of us. I wonder why... I really want to know, sir.
Will you please teach me?" Mel said with a sad tone in her voice. "Fine," mumbled Mr. Merlin. "What is it that you want to know young one?"
"To start, when I grow up, how tall will I be?" Mel had asked very curiously. "You'll be about 110-130 centimeters, or in other words 3.6 to 4.3 ft high." he answered.
"Cool! Next question. How heavy will I be? I don't want to be too heavy.." she said with a giggle. "You'll be only 5.5 to 7.7 pounds!" he said with excitement.
"How is that even possible?" Mel asked, "Well, birds have very thin, light bones. Unlike Owls, like me with tough ones." he said. "Okay, then. How long will I live for? Mel asked.
"You'll live for about 50 years. That's a lot. But if you get to live in the museums, then you'll only live for 40." he said sadly.
"Next!" Mel yelled. "Were is the weather like where flamingos should live?" "Whatever weather you are in right now!" he said chuckling. "Flamingos need to live in warm, tropical places.
You need to live in muddy shallow lakes. So that way you can find food easily." he answered. "What kind of foods do flamingos eat, Mr. Merlin?" she asked.
"Flamingos eat, algae and plankton mostly." he answered yet again. "Hey! My mom made me some fresh plankton for lunch today. It was so good! Next! Where are humans in the world of flamingos?"
"Humans are in the zoos and museums, taking care of those who are taken. The first zoo with a flamingo in it was in 1958 in Switzerland." he said. "Okay. What states and continents can flamingos be found." Mel asked.
"Flamingos live in so many places. They live in South America, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Netherlands, Utah, and California." said Mr. Merlin
"Wow! Thats awesome. Now, how do flamingos get babies?" said Mel. "They lay eggs of course! Just like any other bird. Even though flamingos aren't mammals, they make
their own milk. Boys and girls can make milk for their babies. Isn't that cool? They need to be in a crowded place to make babies. And they make mud nests. When the baby is born, they are gray, not pink.
"Speaking of color, what are their main colors?" Mel suggested. "Well, they have gray legs with pink knees. They have a black bill, that is mostly black but sometimes
it can be different colors. Also, chicks remain with their gray colors for 2-3 years. Some of them may never turn pink." he answered. "Aww. That makes me sad." said Mel.
Before they know it, time had flown so fas it was getting dark out. "I'm afraid that it is time to go home, little one." said Merlin.
"Oh no, Merlin. At least one more? Oh please, please, please!" said Mel. "Fine. One more and thats it. You go on home after that, okay?" said Mr. Merlin. "Deal." replied Mel.
"What kind of... you know..." explained Mel. "Huh?" said Mr. Merlin. "What animals wanna... you know..." tried to explain Mel. "Hurt you?" said Mr. Merlin. "Yeah..."
"Flamingos have very few. You have nothing to fear, Mel." "Okay. Thats a relief!" "A deal is a deal. Time to go..."
"Awh do I have to?" said Mel. "Yes" replied Mr. Merlin. "See you tomorrow?" asked Mel. "Certainly." said Mr. Merlin. With that, the sun went down and Mel had learned some valuable things about her species. She would surely never forget that evening with Mr. Merlin, the wise owl.
