Hip Hop originated in West Africa, and many times is mistaken to have originated in the New York region of the US. Hip Hop sounding tunes were chanted by singing poets and travelers in Western Africa, and were later discovered in the new world through slave trade. The native people would use a technique called toasting, which is talking or chanting over a rhythm or a beat. The technique of toasting was originally developed in Jamaica in the early 1960's. R&B music was very popular at the time and in Miami, Florida people began using this technique over the music, eventually outshining it, instead of enhancing it. | Origins of Hip Hop & Geographical Overview

MC is short for Master of Ceremonies, this term would become very relevant for early rap technique that would be associated with hip hop. Rapping was originally known as MCing, this is one of the many elements that hip hop possess, speaking with rhythm over the background beats adds a large amount of dynamic to this genre of music. In the 1980's rapping would explode into pop culture, setting hip hop on a pedestal. | MCing in Early Hip Hop

DJ's are some of the most influential figures in hip hop music, DJ stands for disc jockey, meaning that they play pre-recorded tracks for others to listen to and enjoy. Disc Jockey's have many techniques to enhance their overall performance, such as: audio mixing, slip-cueing, phrasing, beat juggling, scratching, body tricks, beatmatching, and needle drops. DJ Kool Herc, one of the more influential disc jockey's made a name for himself in New York in the early 60's. He became known as the father of hip hop. | DJing Feat. Kool Herc

Graffiti Art has been used in many different ways throughout the years, beginning in World War II. Graffiti and tagging became a way to set boundaries between street gangs and would later go on to be a form of art. It came to represent a code of some sort, things such as slang were used in this new form of art. New York City can be considered the birthplace of tagging, and would spread throughout the US rapidly. | Graffiti Art

Breakdancing and hip hop music evolved together, breakdancing was a form of dancing that would fit the rhythm and beat to almost any hip hop song, and similar to its musical companion, breakdancing was completely customizable. The dance is founded around two basic moves, the 6-step and toprock. In the early 70's breakdancing made its first appearance in clubs, and other various places. | Breakdancing
