FC: Manifest Destiny Journal | Stephen Brady
June 17, 1846 I was assigned to the Army of Occupation; we are marching to Mexico City to quickly finish this war. We are one of three companies that will attack different parts of Mexico and the southwest. This war is needless but with the addition of Texas as the 28th state, and the stationing of troops at the mouth of Rio Grande, and Mexico’s hostilities President Polk deemed it necessary to declare war on May, 13. We have won many battles on our march, with every new town provides us new victories. Some of our men are from the northern states and therefore oppose the war, which they make perfectly clear every day. I end with the hope of a swift end to this war in hopes of rejoining my wife who is expecting late this year. | Mexican American War
Manifest Destiny and | March 26, 1842 We have been traveling for about a month, I did not want to leave but Pa says we had to move because God wanted us too. He says we will have a better life once we were settled, but Albert has caught sick and there is no more medicine. We have met many of merchants going to Santa Fe they were going to trade with the natives and Mexicans. We traded some furs we had kept from the game that Pa had shot and the eggs from our chicken; I got a new doll. Ma and Pa have many arguments are the direction we will should take to get Oregon. Some Indians attacked us two nights back and took one of our cows, Pa wanted to hunt them down but Ma reminded him that not all natives were savages. The lamp is about out of oil and we are conserving the remainder until we can by more.

 Joseph Smith
Utah Mormon Settlement | September 8, 1884 God, with the death of our beloved leader Joseph Smith all seemed lost; our way of life would crumble into dust. But you have sent Smith’s successor Brigham Young and have shown him that we must move west and an area where our culture would be preserved and protected from the persecutors of the east. Thank you for blessing each family will be award plot according to the size of one’s family, which is so gracious my family of 12 was cramped onto one house, now we will be able to have multiple houses and the family will not be separated. It has been a hard few mouths dieses, famine, and Indians attacks have diminished our numbers severely. But we shall not give up faith; we will pursue and make it to the promise land that you have promised us, no matter the dangers you will protect us. Amen.
 Oregon Territorial Disputes
Texas War for | January 31, 1840 We invited them into our land and sought to make friends. We offered huge empresarios to the American settlers, and they flocked to Texas by the thousands. Soon they outnumbered us two to one and the fear of losing the territory was great. We sealed the borders not letting anyone else cross and raised taxes heavily. But they pursued and kept coming until 1835 they attacked the abandoned fort Alamo. 13 days the battle lasted but in the end all the rebels but a few women and children were dead. April 1836, the rebels defeated our President Sam Houston and forced him to grant their independence becoming the Republic of Texas. The Texan’s have asked the United States many times to annex them into a state. But the refuse, fearing a war; and they are right to because it Texas becomes a state it will mean war.
 To my Loving Family
The California Gold Rush | I write this to you to tell of my success in the hope that you will follow me here. I traveled by sea which I would not recommend, the food rotted and the ride was expensive. While traveling I caught yellow fever and the captain informed me I barely survived. I employ you to come to me I miss you with all my heart and cannot live without you. I have incased in this letter a gold nugget to pay for your trip west ward. You told me you wouldn’t come because it was a fools dream never to be accomplished, nothing to gain but an empty pocket and years wasted. I give you this to show you that you were wrong; I want to start a new life with you here. Mining is not strenuous, mostly panning and small chores. I hope to see you soon my love.
