FC: The Royal Draecons by Pamela Priest

This book is kaleidoscopes from a combination of a Halloween photograph and a fractal. Enjoy! Pam

Draecon was an ancient and powerful being. He chose to flee his physical form to hide away from the pain of being alone. This is his love story.

Draecon spent most of his time unencumbered by his physical form. He moved endlessly about his castle, his hide-a-way, his self imposed prison. He was without a companion, yet again, as he outlived everyone.

Lonely, he went out to see what had changed in the centuries of self isolation. Keeping his ethereal form to remain unseen, he learned how the mortals lived and how technology had advanced. Everything was amazing. He was sorry he'd waited so long to leave his place of solitude.

On his adventure of discovery, he happened upon a place where the mortals played. Here there was music as of which he had not heard before. The mortals were jumping and gyrating oddly. Not at all what he knew of "dancing". He attributed the odd behavior to the drinks they were consuming.

As Draecon floated freely over the crowd, he spotted a woman dancing by herself. Her essence was radiating happiness and she danced with no regrets. Curious, he watched her the rest of the night.

Overcome with curiosity of this profound happiness, the next night Draecon returned to see her but she was not there. The entire place was different as there was no music, no dancing. Just a few mortals eating and drinking.

Draecon returned night after night in hopes of seeing her again. While he waited, he learned more about the day to day lives of these mortals and the era they lived in. What he found in their character was discouraging.

It was weeks before Draecon chanced upon her in another place. This time he took his physical form and approached her. She was open and genuine. Nothing like most of the mortals he'd seen.

Draecon wooed her carefully, as he wanted her to love him without his intervention. He'd become familiar with the ways of the era yet retained his ancient respectful ways. This characteristic was endearing to her.

Soon their relationship grew to the point that he desired for her to join him in immortality. Using conventional ways, he invited her to visit him at his castle. She hesitantly accepted his invitation as she cared about him and wanted to see him again.

She found his home a bit cold and formal, as it is with most castles. Draecon could see she was uncomfortable in this setting. With his powers he could change how she felt instantly, but his respect for her was too great.

As the short visit soon came to an end, the great immortal realized that she would not be happy living as he had been these many centuries. Her essence was defined by the freedom that she had, and he had no right to take that freedom from her.

He promised to visit her and sent her back to her home. Draecon drifted about his realm. He could not get her out of his thoughts. His wish to have her as his wife was strong. Stronger than his desire to live for ever.

The powerful immortal decided he wanted to be with her. Yet he knew he didn't want to watch her die, doomed to continue without her. Draecon knew what he had to do. However, he first needed to know that she felt the same about him.

Draecon spoke with her every day for hours at a time. He patiently waited when she had to work or sleep. He began wondering what it would be like to be mortal and to have needs...other than love of course.

When she had days on which she didn't work, he spent time with her. He could see in her eyes that she loved him. Then one afternoon he was unable to reach her. He went to her home and found her weeping.

Draecon felt a powerful need to protect her from whatever was making her sad. She finally admitted that she felt guilty for leading him on. She could not continue their relationship knowing she was dying.

Draecon assumed this to be true...she was mortal after all. Then he realized what she meant. He had forgotten that she did not know of his immortality. He held her close and promised to never leave her.

Draecon knew exactly what he wanted and went off to fulfill his destiny. He went to speak with the One greater than himself. His wish was granted.

When he returned, she had amazing news. Her illness had disappeared. The doctors claimed a miracle had happened. Draecon smiled. He had willingly sacrificed his immortality to heal her. His only desire was her happiness.

He saw that her happiness returned, and she shared it freely with him. He found mortality challenging, but she was worth it. After a time, he asked her to be his wife.

Her love for Draecon was as deep as his and she happily agreed. They shared many years together, and eventually passed away holding hands. Draecon never regretted giving up immortality for love...
