S: Vancouver and Cincinnati | 2010

FC: Vancouver Aug. 28 - Sep. 4 Cincinnati Nov. 22 - 27 2010

Vancouver, BC | Olivia went on her first plane ride at just 11 weeks old. Howie had a week-long course in Vancouver, and since I was on mat leave, I didn't see any reason for us to not join him for a week in Vancouver. Olivia did great on the plane and did not complain about the early morning wake up and mostly slept on the ride there. When the hotel staff saw how cute she was, we got upgraded to a suite with a bedroom and living room so that Olivia could have her own space. She loved the hotel room and was amazed by her surroundings. Such a happy baby and loving to travel already! She slept through the night for the first time in Vancouver. She also sat up for the first time in her stroller. Lots of big accomplishments while we were in Vancouver.

Howie only had one free day with us before starting his course so we decided to spend the day at the Vancouver Aquarium. Olivia was amazed at the colours, sounds, and different animals. We took our time going through the exhibits and stopped to feed and change Olivia when needed. She napped easily and really enjoyed the outing. | The Vancouver Aquarium

The dolphin show was very entertaining. Lots of splashing from the dolphins and clapping from the crowds. Olivia was sitting with Howie and was probably more entertained by the baby sitting next to them than the dolphins. We had lots of people stop and compliment Olivia, which made Howie hold her even tighter!

At the end of a fun day at the Vancouver Aquarium.

On our way out of Stanley Park, we passed by this 100 year old tree. We stopped to get a picture to see how small we all were standing inside it.

While Howie was at his course, Olivia and I explored downtown Vancouver on foot. With no real agenda planned, I decided to grab a map and see as many Olympic sites as we could find. Our first stop was the Omega Countdown Clock in front of the Art Gallery. Olivia napped while I walked and it was wonderful to be outside in the warm sunshine. We circled around the waterfront and met Howie for lunch. Then it was back to the hotel room for nap time. Later that evening, we were able to meet up with Akira, whom we haven't seen since our wedding. He took us for a yummy sushi dinner and we chatted the night away. When it was time for goodbyes, Akira got the courage to hold Olivia.

In the afternoon, we headed out into the sunshine. We walked along the Seawall and drove into Stanley Park. Left: Olivia looking out across the water to North Vancouver. Below: Olivia resting in the shade after our visit to Prospect Point Lookout. | Olivia and I had lots of fun relaxing in our hotel room. She is quick to smile and has the sweetest laugh. We played on the floor, in bed, on the couch, and watched TV in between feeds and naps. She would sometimes sleep through dinner, so Mommy and Daddy was able to enjoy many all-you-can-eat sushi dinners!

We walked around Canada Place and then down to the Vancouver Convention Centre. On the way, we saw a couple of public art pieces that caught my eye. First was what looked like a giant water drop. The second was a large orca that looked like it was made out of lego. These art pieces were commissioned for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The next two Olympic monuments we found were the Olympic Cauldron and the Inukshuk. The Cauldron was smaller than I expected, but it must have been lovely when lit. It was quite the walk to get down to the Inukshuk as it was by the shoreline. Good thing Olivia's stroller has big wheels. Earlier that same afternoon, a whale had surfaced near the shore where we were, which I didn't find out about until the evening news!

We had a rainy day in the middle of the week so Olivia and I chilled out in the hotel room. We explored the hotel and ordered room service.

The sun came out again the next day so we took the risk and walked to Chinatown. After some window shopping, I decided to go into the Chinese Garden. I especially loved the architecture. It was so calming in there.

We spent our second last day shopping in Richmond. Then it was our plane ride home. Again, Olivia did great on the plane and really enjoyed her vacation.

Cincinnati, OH | For American Thanksgiving, we decided it was time for Olivia to meet her cousins, and for Mommy and Daddy to take advantage of Black Friday shopping! At 23 weeks old, Olivia once again boarded a plane and we flew to Cincinnati. She did very well on the flight and slept most of the way. Cherie, Connor, and Christina took to Olivia right away. And Olivia really enjoyed playing with her cousins. We took everybody to the Newport Aquarium for a fun activity. We saw lots of neat animals and even got to touch sharks! It was a fun day had by all. | The Newport Aquarium

We all took turns (well, except for Olivia) touching the sharks. Their skin was rough and slimy. We spent a long time in the touch pool, getting our courage up to touch each different type of shark.

The Garvis family was warm and welcoming. Conrad and Cheryl gave up their room for our little family. Jacob, Cherie, and Teddy came for the weekend too. Olivia had plenty of family to keep her busy while we relaxed.

Cheryl prepared so much food. There was turkey, stuffing, curry chicken, rice and peas, and on and on. She also invited her neighbours to join us for dinner. It was a delicious meal.

The trip felt really short, but only because there was so many people to meet and so many things to do. Black Friday shopping was amazing. We picked up winter jackets and running shoes for each of us that we badly needed, and Howie spoiled me with, not one, but two Coach purses!! Olivia didn't do too badly either with plenty of clothes to last her for another year. We were sad leaving, but we also know that we will be back again someday soon to visit. Especially at Thanksgiving!
