FC: Alaska Cruise 2009

In the Summer of 2009, we took a 7-day Alaska cruise to Glacier Bay. Ricky, Amanda, Mallika and Grammie Barbara all went on the grand trip. In addition to cruising Glacier Bay, ports of call included Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria B. C. | Juneau | Glacier Bay

We started our trip in downtown Seattle. It was a gorgeous day there, but we were all eager to start our adventure to....

Our ship was the Norwegian Pearl. It was remarkable how large the ship actually was. The amenities were great and the crew was very nice. Freestyle Cruising was definitely a good thing with a 1-year-old!

We cruised up the coast and headed toward the Inside Passage. We had great views from our balcony and the sunsets were spectacular.

We had fun exploring the ship while at sea. This was our first trip on a cruise ship and it turned out to be a great way to travel. There was a lot to see and do even before we arrived at our first port of call. The balcony kept Mallika entertained for much of the trip.

Juneau was the first port of call and it was amazingly wet! We even walked a mile to and from town instead of waiting for the bus (what else is new!). The only one who was not drenched was Mallika, who slept most of the day snug in her covered stroller.

Instead of major excursions, we opted for walking tours of each town. In Juneau, it was so rainy, we cut it pretty short. We did see some of the historical buildings in downtown and we visited the Alaska State Museum.

In Skagway, we toured the Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park. We did not get to ride the historic White Pass Railway, but we did find some good quilt and yarn shops!

Ricky hiked a short distance up a trail from Scagway. He was able to see some King salmon making their way upstream and enjoyed some breathtaking views.

Mallika had a great time on the cruise ship looking at all the new things and just spending time with everyone. They even had a little room just for young toddlers to play in!

After Skagway, we headed into Glacier Bay. Rangers from the National Park boarded the ship to provide information on the glaciers and wildlife of the area.

Though they were still very impressive, the glaciers are much smaller than they used to be. No one knows how long they will persist, but we are glad that we were able to see them!

Our walking tour in Ketchikan led us to the Tongass Historical Museum and then up Creek Street, which was the historical red light district. Now it is home to views of spawning salmon and pretty gift shops. We toured the Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and Eagle Center and also saw the totems of Chief Kyan and Chief Johnson. | Chief Kyan

 Chief Johnson

The last port of call was Victoria B.C. in Canada. Mallika stayed on board with Grammie while we explored the waterfront. It was a beautiful afternoon for the two of us!

Happy to have gone, happy to be back. After 7 exciting days, we arrived in Seattle safe and sound.
