FC: The Adventures of Flat Ellie

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Ellie. Ellie wanted to travel and see new things, but she didn't have any money to travel. She got the idea from a book she read that she could flatten herself and be mailed somewhere. So she did just that, and that begins the story of the adventures of Flat Ellie............

The first place Flat Ellie went was to visit Aunt Heather and Uncle Todd in Grand Prairie, Texas, which is right in between Dallas and Fort Worth. She arrived just in time to see all of the wildflowers blooming. The Texas State flower is the bluebonnet, so just like all of the other boys and girls, Flat Ellie got her picture taken in the bluebonnets.

A fun thing to do in Texas is to go to a ranch and see some Texas Longhorns. One of Uncle Todd and Aunt Heather's friends has a Longhorn Cattle Ranch., so we went out there and checked out the Longhorns, and had fun with our friends.

Another fun thing Flat Ellie discovered was the Fort Worth Stockyards. The Stockyards opened up in 1890 after the railroad came to Fort Worth, and cattle, sheep, and pigs were sold there. It was a very busy place up until the 1950s. Now it is a historic site that everyone can go visit and learn about. There are cattle drives to see, shops to visit, a rodeo every weekend, an 1896 steam engine train to ride, a cattle pen maze to go through, a museum, and lots of other things to do.

In Dallas, one of the most well known assassinations took place. President John F. Kennedy was shot on November 22, 1963 by Lee Harvey Oswald from the sixth floor of the Book Depository as his car was driving down Elm Street. This had a tremendous effect on the American people. Schools let out early, and people were shocked about what had happened, and to this day they remember where they were when it happened. Now there is a memorial to President Kennedy in Dealey Plaza. An "X" marks the spot in the road where he was shot, and there is a Sixth Floor Museum in the School Book Depository.

 We made it to Louisiana!

After spending a short time in Texas, Flat Ellie and Aunt Heather took a road trip to Venice, Louisiana to see Uncle Todd. Uncle Todd had just left to go to work in Louisiana a few days before Flat Ellie arrived.

Just up the road from the hotel is Fort Jackson, named after President Andrew Jackson of Tennesssee. So we dropped by to check it out, but apparently it has been closed since Hurricane Katrina, and currently has construction going on. So we took some pictures from the top of the levy, and some of the entrance.

Venice, LA and Empire, LA | While Uncle Todd was working, Aunt Heather and Flat Ellie took a drive around town to see what they could find. They saw a beautiful field of flowers with cows and horses in it. There were cows grazing on top of the levee, and horses drinking water at the creek. Later they saw some big cargo ships on the Mississippi River. Some were coming from the Gulf of Mexico and some were heading to the Gulf. They also drove over this tall bridge and they could see water for miles on both sides of the bridge. It was a beautiful view. On the east side was the Mississippi River and on the west side was Barataria Bay, which is where the infamous Pirate Jean Lafitte used to smuggle goods into New Orleans.

One day, Flat Ellie got to go to work with Uncle Todd. At first they took a ride out to the barge on a workboat. That was a lot of fun! Flat Ellie got to meet the Captain, and got to help drive the boat! On the way there, they saw some shrimp jumping in the water. Then from the barge they took an airboat to the marshes. Flat Ellie got to help drive the airboat too.

When they got to the marshes, they checked to make sure all of the cannons were working, so the birds wouldn't nest in the oil. The cleanup crews worked on cleaning up the oil. Later that afternoon, they saw a four foot alligator in the water! Flat Ellie had lots of fun, and everybody loved hanging out with Flat Ellie.

Fishing with a beautiful sunset in Venice, Louisiana | An Alligator! Yikes!

The Fishing Capital of the World

 Dinner at the Venice Marina

The time has come to say goodbye. What fun we've had oh my oh my. So on she goes back home to stay. Maybe she'll come back another day.
