 Living in Stuttgart

When I first found out that I would be living with a host family I was a little nervous about living with complete strangers. When I arrived in Stuttgart they welcomed me as a member of their family. | This definitely made it easier for me to get used to living in Stuttgart. They took me to different parts of Germany to help me fully be able to experience the culture. I could not have asked for better hosts.

Universitaet | On the first day of classes we had an orientation. After that first day we attended our German course everyday and our elective course, which for me was Cross Cultural Communications, Monday through Thursday.

Mercedes Benz Museum | Getting to see all of the different cars and how they have developed over the years was extremely fascinating. We not only got to learn the history of Mercedes Benz but the museum also showcased how pop culture changed over the years.

Heidelberg | As one of the trips preplanned by the University, we took a day trip to Heidelberg. We took a boat ride into Heidelberg, had lunch as a group then split up into separate tour groups. After the tour we got to wonder around on our own.

Baden-Baden | On one of our days off, my host family took me to Baden-Baden to try Flammkuchen. My host parents got married and had my host brother in Baden-Baden so it was nice to revisit where their life together began.

Rockenberg | During a long weekend, I went to go visit my friend Christina in Rockenberg. It had been three years since we'd seen each other so we had tons of fun while she showed me around her village and just hung out.

Haus der Geschichte | One of our excursions for Cross Cultural Communications was going to the "House of History". We learned a lot about the history of Baden-Wurttemberg. Afterwards we hiked up a hill to go get ice cream as a class.

In Cross Cultural Communications we had to watch the film, Goodbye Lenin. It was a very good film and I was extremely excited when they played it at this year's International Film Festival here at NAU.

Ulm Cathedral | The cathedral in Ulm has the world's tallest church spire and you're allowed to climb to the top.

Ulm | On one of our days off, my host family took me to Ulm to shop. While there we got to visit the Ulm Cathedral. It was a beautiful city and I am glad I had the opportunity to go.

Photo Excursion | Something Different: the architecture | Typical German: schnitzel and beer | Something Funny: girl from NAU, what people told me was typical German | Something I Like: scenery and hanging out | Something Shocking: giant pancake and styrofoam insulation | Something Familiar: frozen yogurt and McDonalds

As another excursion for Cross Cultural Communications we went to the Lindenmuseum to visit the exhibit on Africa. Since most other areas of the world were represented by students in our course, the instructors thought it would be good to learn about the African culture as well. | Lindenmuseum

Weekend Fun | A good thing about living with a host family with a son my age is that he took me out and introduced me to all of his friends.

Although I had a great time in Germany, I would have liked to have known a couple things before I got there. `If staying with a host family, make sure you plan where to meet when you arrive -Although it would be nice to travel with people from your program, it is cheaper to plan ahead of time. `If you take the train make sure you know if it splits. If it does make sure your in the right section `Make friends within your program. Most of the time they'll go out on weekends if they're not traveling `If you don't have a lot of money, don't worry. There are things you can do that don't require money. Just enjoy where you are. . | Future Reference
