Our big summer vacation - 10 days in Oahu. We arrived on July 12th, after 11 hours of traveling. Although tired, we enjoyed the lei greeting and couldn't wait to get to our hotel. It took several days to adjust to the 6 hour time difference. We had to force ourselves to stay up past 8pm and were awake early each morning. Good thing Starbucks opens at 4am. The weather was perfect, always an island breeze. I was actually sad when we had to leave because we enjoyed every day. Although I don't remember my trip to Hawaii when I was younger, I hope this book will bring back wonderful memories and remind you of an amazing vacation and incredible times we shared together.
All of our favorites were near our hotel - Wolfgang Pucks (Rosemary Fries), Cold Stone Creamery, Subway, and Starbucks. | So tired..loved the pool side beds. | We packed our breakfast cooler at the crazy buffet each morning before hitting the beach or setting out for an excursion.
 Beautiful view every morning.
We enjoyed hanging out at the beach and pool for my 40th birthday. Dinner was amazing at Dukes on the Beach, topped off by eating Hula Pie. You picked out special gifts for me - a flower hair clip, Aloha note pad, Starbucks coffee, Hawaii travel mug, and chocolate macadamia nuts. It is a birthday and night I'll always remember.
We got up early and hiked Diamond Head. Beautiful views of the island.
We went on a Dolphin Excursion expecting to see 1 or 2 dolphins, but saw at least 30 swimming and flipping all around the boat. We enjoyed grilled hamburgers and purple taro rolls before dropping anchor off shore for snorkeling.
Mom was a little nervous snorkeling 1 mile off shore - keeping the girls with the guide. Bekah did a jump dive, and we tossed bread to get the fish to swim near us. We still felt like we were swaying on the boat for the rest of the night.
Polynesian Cultural Center: We drove to the North Shore for hands on adventure and a luau. Don't eat the poi. Most awful thing ever tasted. Enjoyed the boat rides and learning about different cultures.
Sunday Morning: North Shore Shark Adventure This was myBIG 40th birthday present. After looking at videos online, you wanted to get in the cage too. The winds were strong, waves were rough and we got the last tour out for the day. Thank goodness for Dramamine. 4 miles out we approached the cage. It was exciting to see 40-50 sharks swimming around and under the cage. It was really hard to hold on, and we got tossed around. No plexi-glass on the cage..keep those hands and feet inside.
After an exciting morning, we returned to dock only to find that Daddy forgot the rental car key was in his pocket..in the ocean. The electronic fob wouldn't work. The car wouldn't start. He walked a mile to use the McDonald's dryer & buy new batteries, but no luck. You enjoyed Matsumoto's famous shave ice while we called AAA to have the car towed. We took an hour bus ride back to Waikiki while Daddy rode with the tow truck driver and picked up a new car. We met up at the Ala Moana Mall, Damaged keys..$200. A day we will never forget..priceless.
Pearl Harbor | After touring the grounds,we watched a fascinating movie about the attack on December 7, 1941. We then boarded a boat to visit the USS Arizona Memorial. This was dad's favorite part of our vacation.
Before I took the tour, I thought it was going to be really boring. It was so cool to meet and get my picture taken with the veteran heroes who were there. I liked seeing the boat and oil coming out. -Bekah | I thought it was really touching. I also think the movie really captured what happened that day. -Grace
After Pearl Harbor, we visited the Dole Pineapple Plantation. Although very commercialized, we had fun navigating through the pineapple maze, riding the railroad thru pineapple fields, and eating Dole whip. | Next, we thought a quick 0.8mile hike to Manoa Falls would be fun. We didn't plan on it being so muddy and dangerous. Not wanting to give up, we made it to the falls after 1 hour of steep climbing. We tried to hike back quickly, but were covered in mud and threw away our shoes. This was Mom's least favorite part of the trip. We enjoyed a delicious dinner and fun night with the Keppel Family. Great memories.
We hadn't planned for surfing lessons, which were $300 for 1 hr with a group. | We went to Kaimuki Christian Church Friday night. Everyone there was so friendly. We were introduced to Keith, who offered to give us free surfing lessons.
After several wipe-outs, you both got up and rode the waves.
Hawaii was the most amazing place to visit and our favorite vacation.
