FC: Holy Land Tour 2010

2: Arrival in Athens. | Lots to do in Athens. Shopping in the old Platka district was tons of fun.

3: "Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him as he was beholding the city full of idols." Acts 17"16

4: Is it a riot? Is it a protest? Do we really have to wait around to find out?

5: The Olympic Stadium.

6: "Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus (on Mars Hill) and said: | ...I even found an alter with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you." Acts 17:22

7: These steps are centuries old and carved directly into the rock. They are very narrow and steep stairs. | "So he reasoned ...day by day with those who happened to be there." Acts 17:17

9: The ancient Olympic stadium.

13: Everyone loved Rebekah in her life jacket. Not everyone can pull off this look so well!

15: Walk like... | ...an Egyptian!

18: We were able to actually go down in the smaller pyramid. The tunnels were only 3 meters tall. Amazing what they were able to accomplish.

19: We never expected the pyramids to be so close to the city. I always pictured the pyramids way out in the desert away from civilization.

20: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand...to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers." Deuteronomy 6:21-23

22: Donkeys shared the road with the cars. | Local produce. | Our military escort into Cairo. | The Nile River! Very dirty!

23: Egypt was amazing to see, but very culturally different.

24: You go through the valley... | ...up the hill... | ...around the corner... | ...and there it is: JERUSALEM!

25: The temple mount and old city walls as seen from the Mount of Olives.

26: "On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives...and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley..." Zechariah 14:4

28: Palm Sunday Road | "When He came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives...disciples began joyfully to praise God...If they keep quiet the stones will cry out." Luke 19:37-40

29: "They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, "Sit here while I pray." Mark 14:32

30: "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:'May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.'" Psalm 122:6-7

31: "At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne of the Lord, and all nations will gather in Jerusalem to honor the name of the Lord." Jeremiah 3:17 | "I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest." Isaiah 62:6

33: The western wall is also known as the wailing wall. This wall is the last remnant of Herod's Temple.

34: "Then the devil took Him...and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple." Matthew 4:5 | This area is being preserved by the Jerusalem Archaeological Park.

35: We are sitting on the Southern Temple Mount stairs. These are the original stairs to the temple mount. The triple gate on the right would be the main entrance to the temple. The partial gate on the left would been a double gate used to leave the temple. Together they were known as the Hulda Gates. Both would have been in use during the time of Christ.

36: The Rabbinical Tunnels were excavated along the Western Wall under buildings in the old city. This Hasmonian street and building stones were uncovered during the excavation.(bottom right) | Due to the needed height of the walls, massive base stones were needed for support. The largest stone weighs 400 tons. That's the largest stone every quarried by man.

37: Warren's Gate (top right) has been sealed off. The is thought to be the closest you can get to the Holy of Holies.

38: "Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas" Matthew 26:57 "...in the morning they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate." Matthew 27:1-2

39: "The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating Him." Luke 22:63

40: This is the original road that runs past the house of Caiaphas to the Mount of Olives. This would have been the road Jesus was brought up by the Roman soldiers.

41: This is the courtyard of Caiaphas, the high priest. "Before the rooster crows twice you will disown Me three times." Luke 14:72

42: The Lion's gate (also known as St. Stephen's gate) leads to the Muslim quarter of the old city. | "Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right." Proverbs 20:11

43: "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred... | Then Jesus said...'pick up your mat and walk'." John 5:5-8 | Pools of Bethesda

44: The Via Dolorosa (way of suffering) is believed to be the path Jesus took to Golgotha. These are the excavated paving stones from over 2,000 years ago. | "Then they led Him away to crucify Him. As they were going out, they met a man...named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross." Matthew 27:31-32

45: This mosaic was found in Jordon. It showed the main colonnade, which they then excavated. | This would have been the main route through the city as well as the main shopping district.

46: "Carrying his own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (...Golgotha). John 19:17 | "Here they crucified Him" John 19:18

47: "At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid." John 19:41 | "I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said." Matthew 28:5-6

48: "But you, Bethlehem Ephratah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Micah 5:2

49: This is the Valley of Armageddon. "In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem...in the valley of Megiddon" Zechariah 12:11

50: Capernaum was the center of Christ's ministry.

51: "Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon (Peter)" Luke 4:38

52: This archaeological excavation has uncovered 2 synagogues. One built on top of the other. | The lower synagogue is believed to be the one that Christ would have taught in. | "Then He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he began to teach the people. They were amazed at his teaching, because his message had authority." Luke 4:31-32

53: Capernaum was on the main trade routes. The marker on the left gave direction and distance information to distant cities.

55: Mount of Beatitudes "Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on the mountainside...and he began teaching them" Matthew 5:1-2 | "The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head...saying 'Hail, king of the Jews'." John 19:2-3

56: Sea of Galilee

57: "A furious storm came up on the lake...'Lord, save us!'...then He got up and rebuked the wind and the waves" Matthew 8:25-26 | "Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake." Matthew 14:25

58: This 2,000 year old boat was found buried in the mud on the Sea of Galilee shore. This style of boat would have been used by Jesus and His disciples. | "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Matthew 4:19

59: We were baptized in the Jordon River! | "One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and He was baptized by John in the Jordan River. And when Jesus came up out of the water, He saw the heavens split open and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove on Him. And a voice came from heaven: 'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.'" Mark 1:9-11

63: "They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus" Acts 15:39


67: "And it came to pass, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a straight course unto Coos and the day following unto Rhodes." Acts 21:1 | The pillars show the location for the Colossus: one of the wonders of the ancient world.

68: This ancient library contained 12,000 scrolls. | Ephesus is the best preserved of the ancient cities. John and Paul both spent significant time in Ephesus.

72: This entire road was paved by individual mosaic stones.

73: Ephesus had multiple temples to false gods. | The temple of Artemis was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

75: "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: ...Remember the height from which you have fallen! Revelation 2:1&5

77: "Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them... | ...for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these'." Matthew 19: 14

78: Demetrius tried to create a riot against Paul. "...this fellow PAUL has ...led astray ...people here in Ephesus...He says that man-made gods are no gods at all." Acts 19:23-27

79: The building on the top of the distant hill was an outpost. It was also used as a temporary prison. Tradition maintains that John was imprisoned here.

80: "I, John...was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus." Revelations 1:9 | This is the cave where John lived while he wrote the book of Revelations.

83: "The Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him to the judgment (bema) seat." Acts 18:12 "For we must all appear before the judgment (bema) seat of Christ." 2 Corinthians 5:10
