1: ITALY - PAUL AND I FLEW INTO ROME ON SEPTEMBER 3, 2010. JIM AND SHELEE BRENNEMAN ARRIVED AN HOUR EARLIER AND WE WERE ALL MET BY MY COUSIN, CATE CROMPTON RISI. SHE RENTED A LARGE VAN TO TAKE US SIGHTSEEING IN NORTHERN ITALY. OUR FIRST STOP WAS CAPALBIO, AN OLD WALLED CITY, WHICH IS NORTH OF ROME. OUr PREVIOUS BIKE TRIP ENDED HERE. | CAPALBIO

2: CATE TOOK US TO LUNCH AT THE BEACH IN FOLLONICa | SARA, PAUL, SHELEE, & JIM | wE STAYED AT CAMP DARBY - AN AMERICAN ARMY BASE. WHILE HERE WE WENT TO THE AMERICAN BEACH

3: PAUL AND MICHELE | WE WENT TO PISA TO SEE THE LEANING TOWER | SUNSET AT THE AMERICAN BEACH

4: CINQUE TERRA - WE TOOK THE TRAIN FROM LA SPEZIA TO RIOMAGGIORE | WE HIKED FROM RIOMAGGIORE TO MANAROLA

5: WE HIKED FROM MANAROLA TO CORNIGLIA

6: NEXT WE HIKED FROM CORNIGLIA TO VERNAZZA | WE TOOK THE TRAIN FROM VERNAZZA TO MONTEROSA

7: MICHELE HAD AN ARMY DINNER IN ALBA SO WE WENT TO DINNER AT LA ROSA DEI VINI. WE STAYED AT A GENERAL'S campground, Panathlon international club di alba, AND HAD REALLY DELUXE ACCOMMODATIONS. | PAUL AND JIM WENT BIKING WITH MICHELE AND STEPHANO THROUGH THE BAROLO WINE REGION & SAW CHURCHES, castles, AND VINEYARDS. Sara, Cate, & Shelee toured & met the guys for lunch in bossolasco. OUR LUNCH STOP

12: the pot is a BIKE TRAIL THAT WAS A BARBED WIRE FENCE THAT THE GERMANS USED TO KEEP THE PATRIOTS IN DURING WWII | BIKING AROUND LJUBIJANA

13: when biking throughout slovenia you go through many quaint villages with beautiful churches

14: biking to beautiful lake bled | 41 miles

15: we stayed at hotel vila bled this was tito's summer residence where he entertained famous and important people | wall mural in tito's movie room

16: slovenia is well known for its hay drying on the racks in the barns

17: slovenia is also well known for its honey and the painted front panel on the bee hives

18: lake bohinj - another beautiful lake | we biked up to the waterfalls but did not do the hike up to them | 41+ miles

19: sights on our way to kransjka gora | psnak mill & sawmill radovna a village that was burned down | snack stop | 30+ miles

20: kransjka gora a ski town famous for the biggest ski jump in the world | paul biked from slovenia, to austria, lunch in italy, & back to slovenia | view out our hotel window

21: on SARA'S way down into auStria SHE did not brake properly. HER wheel over heated & THE tire blew off the wheel and THE tube WAS RUINED SHE WAS driven back to kransjka gora in this fiat | cute towns, beautiful views & great scenery | jill ellis from england

22: triglav national park & vrsic pass with 50 switchbacks- 24 up and 26 down- challenging! | switchback #8 - russian chapel the switchbacks are cobbled | we made it to the top! | 14% grade

23: view of the valley biking down vrsic pass | 42+ miles

24: biking to kobarid & the soca river valley | wwi museum | hotel hvala

25: beautiful bike ride along the soca river on our way to solkan near nova gorica | beautiful blue water | 35 miles

26: biking downhill into trieste | sightseeing in trieste | piazza unita d'italia | the harbor | roman theatre 1-2 ad. | san giusto cathedral | church of s. maria maggiore | 44 miles

27: grand hotel duchi d'aosta | james joyce | wonderful dinner & wine with every course at harry's grill | great views on our walking tour of the city

28: we left trieste by ferry boat- our bikes left by truck | we crossed the golfo de trieste to muggia | we biked through portorose to piran | the city wall | lots of rain while in this town | 25 miles in the rain

29: the venetian house c.1450 | hotel tartini - tartini statue in the square | croatia is in the distance we walked on some very old steps around town

30: we biked past many flooded fields | biking to postojna- hilly and windy! | people mover ride into the cave | postojna cave | hotel sport in postojna | army base where Bruce was stationed in postojna | 58 miles & it seemed all uphill

31: back to ljubijana - more shopping & sightseeing - 32 + miles | we hiked up to the castle great views of the city from up here | dinner at gostilna sestica | farmers market & shopping | kayak races

32: we took a train to villach, austria & an overnight train to rome & stayed in a couchette | cate met our train in rome | san angelo bridge & statues on the bridge by bernini | sightseeing in roma | interesting fountains | breakfast on the train

33: vittorio emanuelle - rome capital | a walk into vatican city | old roman wall ruins egyptian obelisk

34: trevi fountain | pagan church 125 ad | 2nd day in rome | pantheon holds the tumbs of 2 kings, a queen, & raphelle santi, a sculpturer | st. peters in chains - this church contains michaelanglo's moses

35: we saw many beautiful old churches in rome

36: gladiatores exhibition in the colosseum | the roman colosseum

37: view of the arch of constantine from inside the colosseum | view outside the colosseum

38: palatine hill and the forum

39: a fausto coppi exhibit was inside the Vittorio emanuelle capitol building | he is one of the best italian bike racers of all time

40: pompeii | the whore house | the sewer system in the street | picture in the whore house

41: mt. vesuvius behind the mystery house | food vendors | view down to naples

42: mt. vesuvius & herculaneum (ercolano) | aug.24, 79 ad this town was buried under 50-60 ft of mud and ash. herculaneum was a resort town for the very well to do. it is better preserved than pompeii .

43: we enjoyed going into the mens and womens bath houses. each had a massage stone with a hole in the ceiling to measure the time. paul in a bath tub.

44: biking on the Appian way

45: it was very thrilling to bike on this old roman road. | paul's flat tire

46: vatican city st. peter's cathedral museums & the sistine chapel we enjoyed taking the 3 hr tour

47: the vatican museum with its famous paintings, statues, tapestries, & gallery of maps

48: baths of caracalla & a menagerie of 11,000 animals | circus maximus | catacombs of san sebastiano

49: Variety of restroom's that we encountered on our trip | "squatter" | men's restroom in Herculaneum jim and paul demonstrating how it was used | luxury restroom in Tito's villa bled

51: biking and sightseeing we had a wonderful trip to italy and slovenia! biking is an excellent way to explore a country & we had wonderul food, we loved the union & lasko beer in slovenia, saw fantastic scenery, & had fun times with friends & family. This trip was a once in a lifetime chance to visit with cate and her family and to have our own private tour guide to see the many wonderful sights in rome and around italy! this collage shows some of the highlights our trip. this trip was full of many wonderful experiences and memories! paul and sara schnabel
