FC: 1 | A Journey to Kansas City, and Back Again | By: Mrs. Chopp
1: A CITY OF GREATNESS: | Kansas City | Kansas City is located in the heart of America, and is part of the Midwest Region often referred to as "The Breadbasket." Along both coastlines of the US, few give credit to Kansas City, Missouri as being a significant force among big cities in the country. Often forgotten outside of the Midwest, Kansas City has a unique culture, and revitalization that has empowered many people to return to the city of their roots. Known for jazz, barbecue, and the Chiefs, Kansas City has much more to offer than many know. Kansas City is currently ranked #15 on Bloomberg's list of the top 50 US cities to live.
2: HISTORY | KANSAS CITY | Kansas City's origins date back to the early 1800's, but the "Town of Kansas" wasn't established until 1838. The Civil War marked an important time in KC, as the battles over slavery divided Kansas and Missouri. After the Civil War bridges were built across the Missouri River, and transnational railroads connected the east and west of the United States, right through Kansas City. This new transportation and commerce helped the city's economy boom. The 1920's and 1930's really "put Kansas City on the map," so to speak. The Great Depression was significantly less evident in KC than other places around the country, and the Harlem Renaissance penetrated city limits. Jazz clubs and great musicians helped define the city. Kansas City's history is rich in culture and traditions, which remain strong today.
