1: Life in India By: Courtney Cole
2: My name is Kali and I live in India. I reside in a city called Varanasi which lies along the holy Ganges River. My name means "dark goddess" I belong to the Brahmin caste which is the highest in our system.
3: As a Brahmin, my job is to be a priestess. In the temple, I work under a high priest. We must teach, conduct ceremonies, worship, pray and maintain the temple grounds. My presence is necessary at weddings, funerals, and most other important ceremonies.
4: In the religion of Hinduism, we worship our gods in temples. We study our sacred texts, the Vedas, which state all of our beliefs. We must work hard in this life to achieve good Karma. We believe that this will cause you to have a good life when you die and are reincarnated into a new form.
6: As a Brahmin, I eat things that will keep my body and mind whole. I am, as all Brahmins, a vegetarian. I also refrain from foods like garlic and onions which affect the senses.
8: on top of | the world | seeing the city from above | The caste system is very organized. You are born into your caste and cannot move out of it unless you are reincarnated into a new caste. You may only marry within your caste and fo the jobs that are characteristic of your caste.
9: The Brahmin caste is the highest and contains priests and priestesses. | The second caste is called Kshatriya. It is made up of warriors and land owners.
10: Vaishya is the next caste consisting of merchants.
11: The next caste is Sudra which consists of artisans and farmers.
12: Last are the Harijans. The are outside the caste system, known as "untouchable"
