On September 19, 1981 Jeff & Donna Bonne were married. They honeymooned in Honolulu and on Maui at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. After 30 years, they decided it was time to go back. . . . Vacation in Maui June 2 - 9, 2011 Napili Kai Beach Resort, Maui | Girls - Thanks for the limo ride!
Napili Kai Beach Resort is a little piece of Heaven on Earth. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the resort. We stayed in room #30 of the Honolua building and had lovely views from our balcony. There was a lot of rainy weather especially Saturday night when huge thunder storms hit the islands. We awoke to see ponds forming around the resort. Reports of landslides cancelled our visit to Lanai. Waves pounded the beach and were big enough for surfers. Unfortunately, the rough surf stirred up the waters and made snorkeling conditions poor.
 Air Maui Helicopter Tour
On Sunday we took a hour-long West Maui & Molokai helicopter tour. There were white ribbons of water streaming down the steep mountainsides due to the heavy rains. Our pilot was amazed at the amount of water. We flew into steep canyons just under the cloud ceiling and over areas where Jurassic Park was filmed. It was a breathtaking adventure.
Kapalua Beach Trail | Monday was a day of hiking and exploring. We began with this trail starting at Kapalua Beach. It runs along boardwalks past million dollar homes and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Fleming Beach (right) was rated the #1 beach in the USA in 2006.
As the boardwalk ends, the trail leads out to an amazing "moonscape" scene formed by jagged volcanic lava flows. It was an fascinating sight.
Old Kahakuloa Village & Julia's Best Banana Bread | Monday's journey continued by car. The road from Napili to Kahakuloa is about 25 miles, much of that on steep, winding roads that sometimes narrow to just one lane. Some say it is West Maui's version of the Hana Highway. Yet many make the trek. What's the attraction? Aside from the beauty along the way, "Julia's Best Banana Bread on the Planet" draws people in. Finding her bright green shack in this quaint village, along with her smiling face, and yummy banana bread is the reward at the end of a long journey.
The narrow road leading into the village passes by an old Hawaiian Congregational Church, now boarded up. Kahakuloa Head and the surrounding bay is simply beautiful.
Tuesday evening we were greeted with the Aloha Spirit upon every turn at the Old Lahaina Luau. Each guest was presented with an orchid lei and women were given flowers for their hair. Music filled the air and cold tropical drinks were at your fingertips. Throughout the beautiful grounds were Hawaiians in traditional clothing demonstrating a variety of crafts. The buffet featured roast pig and other island favorites. Once it was dark, the history of Maui, the Islands. and their people were told through breathtaking music and dance. It was a beautiful evening!
Teralani Snorkeling Adventure | On Wednesday we sailed on the Teralani 2 catamaran from Kaanapali Beach to Honolua Bay. The sun was shining and we were ready to snorkel. We made a short stop at Slaughterhouse Beach and slipped into the chilly waters to finally see some of the sea life we had hoped to. Our next stop, Honolua Bay, is a protected marine reserve. The U-shaped bay is rimmed with beautiful coral reefs making it a perfect snorkel spot. Here we saw beautifully colored coral, fish, urchins, Green Sea Turtles and a Manta Ray. We were among the first off and the last back on the boat at both stops. A Continental Breakfast, BBQ, and open bar rounded out this outstanding day.
Honolua Bay Two days before we sailed, we got a glimpse of what our snorkel trip would look like when we saw our boat and others out enjoying this amazing gem on West Maui.
Time to Relax We enjoyed time on the beach and at poolside. The Hanki-Panki whirlpool was a great way to relax after a day of hiking. We played several rounds of golf on the 18-hole putting green. What a wonderful place to unwind.
Dining Out and In A big part of a vacation is enjoying good food. Mama's Fish House near Paia was incredible. We walked down Napili beach to The Gazebo where I tried the famous Banana-Macadamia Nut Pancakes. They were fantastic. It was worth the wait. | We walked up the hill to the Pineapple Grill at Kapalua for a sunset dinner. Another evening we grabbed a great burger at the Cool Cat Cafe in Lahaina.
We found some great food at the local Napili Market & Plaza including an island favorite called Ahi Poke' which is seasoned diced, raw Ahi. Mama's Ribs made for a great take-out meal and one night we cooked our own steak dinner. On our last evening, we enjoyed a sunset dinner at The Seahouse Restaurant at Napili Kai. The food was excellent and we were treated to a special dessert in honor of our anniversary.
Aloha | Our trip to Maui was na ka 'oi - the best!!
