FC: Motorcycle Diaries The Journeys and the Destinations

From riding on the back on my Dad's 1977 BMW to my riding my own 3 Flags Classic and beyond, the journey on the motorcycle has galvanized my wanderlust. Trips around the continent of North America have taken me to New York City, Las Vegas, Tombstone, Moab, Seattle, Boise, San Francisco, L.A., Toronto, San Diego, Route 666 in Arizona and the Queen Elizabeth Highway in Alberta (Hwy 2). All the roads, in the cold, rain, sleet, hail and blazing sun have taken me forward in believing that "It's the Jouney and not the Destination" Here are some pictures of both. Enjoy!

24th Annual 3 Flag's Classic From Nogales, Mexico to Medicine Hat, Alberta Sep 3 - 6, 1999 Through Gallup, NM Glenwood Springs, CO Cody, WY At the Cody, WY checkstop, we adopted a team of riders from the Netherlands with a flat tire. Mai rode in the truck with Dad as I completed my first 3 Flag's Classic Rally riding my first motorcycle, a 1985 Honda Nighthawk. Jos, Jan and Jan crossed the finish line with me. We all celebrated at the banquet following the ride.

Our fast friends invited me along on part of their trip back to California. | We head west on the TransCanada Highway to breakfast in Banff. | With stellar weather at our disposal, we took the Banff/Jasper Parkway north and had to part ways. I made the cold trek back to Edmonton with many memories of the Rally and my new friends.

We said farewell to my father in Lincoln City July 2001

One week after getting possession of the R1200C... | Angeles Crest Mountains had some rain earlier in the week...

Angels were riding with me this day...Scott and Bobby made sure I got home okay. | And the bike went down going around a corner at 30 mph. Only some bumps and cosmetic damage to the bike....

29th Annual 3 Flag's Classic From Mexicali, Mexico to Kelowna, British Columbia Sep 3 - 6, 2004 Through Torrey, UT Pocatello, ID Sandpoint, ID My R1200C BMW, on my own, by myself. I finished working in Las Vegas so it was a short ride to the starting line. But upwards of 43 Celsius on the thermometer in the desert! Phew! | "I am very happy that I was able to do this ride. This was more than just a motorcycle trip for me. The last time I spent a large amount of time with my father was 5 years ago doing this rally. I am proud that I could do it again, myself. But I know he was watching over me every mile, every hail storm and every sunrise. It did my soul good to do this ride and thanks for everyone's patience for when I went on and on about this ride. This was special and I am glad I can share it with you, my friends."

Excerpts from my Rally Diary... DAY 1 - "...and set my alarm for 2:45am!!!" "On the highway to Mexicali with my start card in my back pocket with my passport." "It’s really windy and the trucks and RV’s are passing me as I cling to the bike to keep it upright." "...that black cloud over there...not so nice." "From 65 to first gear and I can’t see the frickin’ road!" DAY 2 - "They say that if you’re on a motorcycle, you’re doing it right." "Call me Ingrid “Storm Chaser” Kottke from now on folks. If there is a cloud, I’ll drive right for it!" "So just imagine, raining, motorcyclist in the slow lane, saddle dancing!" DAY 3 - "4:30am! So it’s pitch black outside. Oh, there is some dark blue over the mountains to the east. Hmmm was that an IHOP I saw on the way in last night? Mmmm pancakes!" "On a whim, I walk to the middle of the highway and take a photo - not every moment of the day can you do that especially on the I-15." "...but with a couple of sections of curves, didn’t save me any time. But the view was worth it. "...tomorrow I brave the border and importing the bike." "...a very old man comes up to me and asks if I was the one who rode the small bike a few years back with her dad following in a pick up truck. As a matter of fact, yes that was me." DAY 4 - "...but it was like driving in a dream." "I’m starting to believe that you can eat a balanced meal out of a 7-11..." "...off we go - looking for a pee-break!" "So much for the GPS that was supposed to talk Canadian!"

2007 Ride to Nowhere | Leavin' Las Vegas to the Oregon Coast via Yosemite National Park & San Francisco, up the coast to Seattle to see my friends on the Vision of the Seas before heading inland to Boise for some theatre and then to Moab for dirt biking Arches National Park. Finally through Bryce and Zion National Parks onwards back to Las Vegas. | What a ride!

And I did get a little rain...

2009 Las Vegas, NV to Winnipeg, MB Bringing the bike back to Canada - for good! | I met up with my Mom on the coast of Oregon for my birthday.

Gallucci's Birthday Pizza "Just what I wanted!!!" | And only one rainy afternoon the entire trip. I knocked on wood before the trip...

2010 New York City! A week to get there, a week to visit and a week to get home. And not a drop of rain the entire trip. I knocked on wood before the trip...

Birthday Sushi with good friend Greg | Motorcycle "Henna" | Boy was it H-O-T ! ! !

2011 Beautiful British Columbia | Vancouver Island Port Renfrew, Long Beach and the Malahat
