New York - Page Text Content

S: New York City 2011

THE BIG APPLE | Our trip started the day after Thanksgiving (11/25/11). It was a little rough when MiMi overslept because I forgot to call her. However, we made the plane on time, with everyone and everything.

In true Barnes style, we hit the subway right away and headed to Times Square.

On the 1st evening, we ate at a delicious NYC pizzeria, John's.

The sausage pizza was amazing, and the Yuengling beer was pretty great, too.

On Saturday morning, we got up & went to Central Park - BEAUTIFUL

We also went to Central Park Zoo, small but nice. My favorite thing there was the penguins & a 4D Polar Express movie - it snowed inside the theater.

We had to visit the Strawberry Fields portion of Central Park, dedicated to John Lennon. We all loved it, and there was a man playing acoustic guitar to Lennon songs and singing. | The Dakota building, where Lennon lived.

After walking in the park all day, we were so hungry. We went to Gray's Papaya and had some fantastic authentic NYC hot dogs and papaya juice. MiMi & the kids got there by having a guy pull them by bicycle; they may have seen Lady GaGa on the way.

This was a truly crazy Saturday night in NYC. We enjoyed some Manhattan drinks at the resort, then went out and lived it up in Times Square. We bought many scarves and t-shirts off street vendors & had a great buggy ride around Manhattan at 2AM (with a guy named Jerry who really knew his Bible). We finally made it back to the room around 4AM.

On Sunday, we trekked over to 34th Street & saw the Empire State building. The views were spectacular. The size of the city could certainly be realized from up there.

More beauty from Empire State Building - and Brian & I's Sleepless in Seattle kiss.

More "Good Eats" on Sunday night - this time in Little Italy> We ate at the first pizzeria in America, Lombardi's. Very good pizza, but John's sausage is still the winner. Melody also got her stylish New York hat in Little Italy & Cady got a bag.

Monday began our museum tours. These pics are at the Natural History Museum (where Night at the Museum took place). We all enjoyed the dinosaurs and the planetarium.

This may have been my favorite thing we did - a sunset cruise around New York and the Statute of Liberty.

Cruising on the Hudson & East Rivers

The Brooklyn Bridge & NYC skyline are stunning at night. I especially loved the new Tower One going up near the old World Trade Center site.

The 26th floor of the resort had a nice bar decorated for Christmas. Jackson loved the tree. | Monday night found us eating at Rosie O'Grady's pub. The tomato soup and New York cheesecake were stellar.

On Tuesday, we went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my favorite by far.

The museum was full of beautiful paintings, sculptures, & artifacts.

 My girls loving art

More fun at the Met, subway, and a hot dog vendor outside the Met.

On Tuesday night, MiMi & Thomas went to Phantom of the Opera & we ate at Carnegie Deli.

On Wednesday, we went to The Museum of Modern Art.

Lots of Van Gogh, Picasso, and Monet for Brian & the girls to appreciate.

 Fun with Andy Warhol paintings

After leaving the MoMA, we went to Top of the Rock (the observation decks of Rockefeller Center).

Before going to Top of the Rock, we ate at a place hidden inside a hotel, The Burger Joint - YUMMY.

The tree lighting at Rockefeller was too crowded, so we went to Macy's. The kids met Santa and bought some cute Muppet toys. The Macy store windows were amazing.

After Macy's, we went to the Lower East Side to eat at Katz's (famous deli from When Harry Met Sally). The pastrami was great & the girls enjoyed a turkey sandwich.

Finally made it back to see the lit tree

On Thursday, we went to the 9/11 Memorial

On our final night, we ate at an Italian-Argentinian restaurant (Sosa Borella).

Brian, the girls, & I went to Phantom of the Opera on Thursday night - SO GREAT

After the show, we walked Times Square for the last time. This was definitely one of our best vacations. Cadence refused to leave the room because she did not want to go home; we all felt the same way. Can't wait to go again!
