New York Trip - Page Text Content

S: New York 2011

BC: Thank you, New York... "because I knew you, I have been changed for good..."

 GOING TO...

From Nanny's journal - "...my first airline flight went off without a hitch...Chicago leg was a little bumpy...seats are not comfortable." | Gotta Facebook this adventure every step of the way... | We didn't think we'd get Nanny on a plane... but she'll do just about anything for a Granddaughter...

our home for the next few days... | We decided to rent an apartment instead of getting two separate, very expensive hotel rooms. It was a good idea except that we ended up with a HORRIBLE apartment manager, MONA...she was completely unhelpful and unreachable when we needed her...toilet overflowed and flooded the bathroom and we couldn't reach her, A/C wasn't cooling very well, and she wouldn't call us back, we had no instructions on how to use the odd washing machine set up, and there was no internet access like she promised. Other than that, it was a nice space, and a perfect location near Central Park. 2166 Broadway (@77th) | These little cards will prove to be a very good investment over the next few days...$121 ...worth every penny...you'll pay for it in your first day and a half...

Big Kudos to the Big Apple for turning that "rude New Yorker" stereotype completely around on us. Almost every New Yorker we met (with the exception of Mona) was completely friendly, helpful, and kind. We truly enjoyed our stay. Here are a few of the New Yorkers that we didn't get pictures of, but who made our must remember list: -that cop with the awesome Bronx accent who let Leah play with his dog... -the carriage driver in Central Park who accosted the taxi driver with the horse whip and then threw carrots at him to "defend us"... :) -several nice people who pointed us in the right direction in the subway stations -our fabulous talkative taxi drivers -the guy at Dylan's candy store who made sure they had frozen hot chocolate just in time for us -all of our waiters...especially at Juniors -the random guy in our apartment building who helped carry our suit cases and joked about stealing them if we looked the other way -the zoo man who let us in the bathroom -the doorman who put a window unit in our apartment, because he felt sorry for us and seemed to know Mona was an unresponsive !@*!? -the silly guy in the Empire State building that flirted with Grandmom -the Hollister model wanna-be's who sat grinning on a park bench as we took their picture -the dumb guy who was trying to pick Leah up by asking her if she was from Australia (because of her purple hair)? -the very observant Gershwin guy who complimented us on our supermegaawesomefoxyhot attire

We felt like sardines on or first subway trip...but it was rush hour...it got much better after that...we learned pretty quickly how to figure out which bus or subway we needed to take to make our way around the city. If we couldn't quite figure it out, there was always a friendly New Yorker around to help us get back on the right track. | "We made it to 5th Avenue! No. 1 , 5th Avenue... we gotta go to 987!"

We hoped we might run into someone famous while in NY, but the closest we came was the Einstein reincarnation that sat beside Vick on the M5 bus, and Grandmom swore one of Tiger Wood's illegitimate kids got on the plane with us... | "I'm the map, I'm the map, I'm the map>>>" | They still honk...

...by the time we got to the apartment, we were all starving. Next stop...dinner at: | Leah was also a big fan of the Lox Bagels (cream cheese and salmon) at a little breakfast diner near Rockefeller Center. But she was NOT a fan of the little fishes in her rice from "Fatty Crab's" | One of Beck's favorites... the black & white cookies

...only the first of many food adventures while in New York. | At lunch later in the week, we had to try the New York pizza...and we were indeed impressed. | This pose made possible only after a strenuous subway yoga warmup session.

This is what Mick and I saw on one of our first dates...at Jones Hall in Houston. I wish you were here with me, baby. Thanks for being so unselfish and giving us up on your b-day...for being the kind of husband that I can completely trust to take care of everything while I am away...taking us to the airport, taking care of Anna, and holding down the fort for a couple of weeks. I love you...

This was our first stop, and in our top ten of favorite parts of the trip...definitely where we took the most pictures...obviously | Madam Tussaud's

"Why is there a dead Care Bear hanging there? That is horrible..."

 "Rats on Hats" Guy!!

...so many interesting things to see...

"'til it shines like the top of the Chrysler building" | Hey, Becky! This is the Chrysler Building | ...and THAT is the Empire State Building...:)

"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today. I want to be a part of it... New York, New York!" -FRANK SINATRA

Rockefeller Center | Now that Nanny can fly, the 86th floor is no big deal...she will conquer this fear of heights before it's over...

 TOP of the ROCK

the view from the top of the Rockefeller Center

"Mommy look...she has purple hair..."/"Don't make eye contact" :) | Breakfast with the birds & a bit of people watching in front of Rockefeller Center...

Only one of the many beautiful buildings in New York City... | All made completely of Legos...in this amazing toy store...

We were pleasantly surprised by how many neatly tucked green spaces were scattered around the city...

We were thrilled to find that the Harry Potter Exhibition just happened to be in New York for our viewing pleasure... Anna and Josh would have loved this one, so we got them some really cool souvenirs from the gift shop. Leah and I got to repot a mandrake, throw quaffles, and sit in Hagrid's chair...very nerdyawesome...

"BODIES" Exhibit | Grandmom and Leah's shirts tried to disappear in the green screen...

Metropolitan Art Museum | I am usually more impressed with the architecture of the musuem itself and the talent that hangs out in front than the art inside...

 Central Park | beautiful... | Day 2

 From Nanny's journal..."So much walking today" :)

 A Ride through Central Park

Our driver after "whipping" a taxi and throwing carrots at him to defend us..."I am sorry, ladies...he should not be driving here...it is dangerous to you and the horses." | Check out the Central Park yoga class...

 June 7, 2010

Central Park Zoo...we did not bother going in, because the animals are all in Madagascar now...:) but the entrance looks exactly like the movie...

Let's try "Something Different"! | We made a little rule that we were going to taste a different new drink each day as part of our adventure.

Over the whole 12 days, we tasted: Strawberry Marguerita Pineapple Express Bon Voyage Blueberry Happiness (we can't remember the name, so we made this one up) frozen Mojito (Vick's favorite) frozen Marguerita (still Bon's fav) Pomegranite Cosmos (a close 2nd fav) Pina Coladas and Mango Pina Coladas (Nanny and Leah's favorite) Mai Tai Rum Punch Dark and Stormy and the yucky bingo drink that mom gave away...:) | ...that was actually the name of what I ordered at Juniors..."Something Different" ...deep fried potato pancakes with roast beef and apple sauce... then the best cheesecake I've ever had...MMMM!! | ...and Becky's lobster roll might have been even better than mine

...the view from the Ferry | :)

 Ground Zero

St. Paul's Chapel | This small church across the street from the site of the World Trade Center was miraculously unharmed on 9/11. It is now the site of a memorial museum. | It was moving to notice that in the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city, these two blocks remained respectfully quiet and somber in honor of those lost.

Leah | O | Our seats are great... we can't wait!! | She looks like Elphaba...

Gettin' beautified for our "night on the town"... Going to see WICKED tonight! We can't wait. Broadway is what we've all been looking forward to...our favorite part of New York City!!

‘Wicked is a Broadway musical that shows the untold story of the witches of Oz, and how two young women named Galinda and Elphaba became Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West. It shows Elphaba as the misunderstood girl that she is, and tells the story from her perspective. Book by Winnie Holzman. Based on the best–selling novel “Wicked – The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” by Gregory Maguire. Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. “So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.”

Wicked was INCREDIBLE!! Great music... great cast... great set... great seats... great evening!!

"I mean come on, they’re just shoes. Let it go!" | "Well, we can’t all come and go by bubble!" | "Where I’m from, the best way to bring people together is to give them a common enemy." | "There’s no pretense here. I happen to be genuinely self-absorbed and deeply shallow."

"It seems the artichoke is steamed." | "TOSS, Toss!" | "What could he get me? I clash with everything." | "It’s GA-linda. With a ‘Ga’." | "Loathing..."

We grabbed a cab to find Serendipity for brunch...we wanted the experience of "hailing a cab"...which takes some practice apparently...and we were in a bit of a hurry to get back and be ready for the cruise. Serendipity was closed, but we found "Dylan's Candy store" which was a kid's dream come true...tried the "frozen hot chocolate", and settled into our sugar coma for the cab ride to the cruise port. | Look, Isabel... we followed Justin's bus out of New York :) | "Should I be worried that there is a handle in the back of this cab? Should I hold on?"

picture perfect memories | Thank you, New York..."because I knew you, I have been changed for good..."
