FC: A Visit to the Edge of the World
At the end of June, Brian and I flew to the East Coast to visit Sam & Sam. | Summer Vacation 2009 | (Best. Vacation. Ever.) | St. John's, Newfoundland:
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia On our way to St John's, we had a four hour layover in Halifax. Brian, never being one to sit around, had us running down to the rental car booths and held an auction to get the cheapest price we could for a four hour rental. We drove out to Dartmouth, had some great pizza, walked along the coast, and fell in love with the scenery. We'll go back there someday.
 Colourful Downtown St John's
We attended a beautiful church on Sunday morning, and took a walk about the town afterwards.
 Butterpot Provincial Park
Samuel and Vader took Brian and me to Cape Spear for the afternoon; what a beautiful place! | Cape Spear: The Edge of the World
The wind on the coast is so strong and blows so often that the trees only have branches on one side.
Sam, Sam and Brian get Screeched In at a local pub in Quidi Vidi | Choose a hat | Eat some dried fish | Kiss a puffin's butt | (I had no interest in eating the fish or in kissing a dead bird. I volunteered for the job of photographer.)
Honorary Newfoundlanders | *mwah* | *smak* | Drink a shot of Screech and shout!
 St John's
Views of St. John's from The Rooms, a local museum with a fabulous coffee shop.
 Ferryland | That's a real iceberg!
My favourite part of our trip was our excursion to Ferryland. We had a delicious picnic (I ate ham & Brie with apple on fresh oatmeal bread) on a hill overlooking a beached iceberg and whales playing in the distance. | The Ferryland Lighthouse Picnics were recommended in a 2008 issue of Chatalaine magazine. | My First Orzo Salad. Yum.
The guy with the mic lost his Newfie accent several times, but people assure us that he's a Newfoundlander, born and bred. | O'Brien's Whale Watching
We saw a few whales and thousands of flying potatoes. Er, Puffins.
Brian and I took a three hour hike along the coast one day. It was a perfect day to be outside, and Vader made a great companion! | Hiking the East Coast of Canada
Cabot Tower, Signal Hill | Signal Hill
On our last morning in St John's, we finally had a foggy day. These photos were taken at Signal Hill. It was heartbreaking to board our plane and head back home: I fell in love with the East Coast.
