BC: The End
FC: Outlander Highlights from the CIE Scottish Dream Tour May 8 - 14, 2011 | Our Outlander Tour
The story of Outlander begins with Claire and Frank. They are staying at a bed and breakfast in Inverness. They cruise down Loch Ness to Urquart Castle. We got to see all these things during our stay in Scotland!
Claire goes to the standing stones at Craigh na Dun and hears a horrible sound coming from a cleft stone. She touches the stone and is suddenly pulled into the past. | These are the standing stones at Clava Cairns, believed to be an ancient burial ground. It was an eerie place to visit. There are standing stones like these all over Scotland.
Claire wanders through the woods and stumbles upon an English dragoon that assaults her. She is rescued by a group of Scottish Highlanders. | They ride through the Scottish countryside to Castle Leoch. If Castle Leoch were a real place, I think today it would look something like the castle shown here.
Claire stays as a guest in the castle while the MacKenzies try to figure out who she is. She busies herself in the garden, learning about various plants. | In its full glory, Castle Leoch probably would have looked like Inverary Castle.
Eventually, Colum hears that she has knowledge of medicinal plants and healing, and he asks her to set up a physician's practice in the castle. She spends her days treating small ailments and setting broken bones.
Claire tries to escape to Craigh na Dun during the confusion of the Gathering. She runs into Jamie, who tells her she won't get far. Colum's security will be high because of the massacre at Glen Coe. This is the mountain where that massacre took place.
That night, Jamie tells Claire the Fraser oath: Je suis prest - I am ready. Here it is on my kilt pin. | After the Gathering, Colum orders that Jamie, Claire, and Dougal will travel to Fort William so that Claire can ask the English captain for assistance.
On the way to Fort William, Dougal raises money for Bonnie Prince Charlie in various inns and taverns. Against Jamie's will, he uses the scars on Jamie's back as an exhibition. We ate in a restaurant designed to look like such a tavern.
To keep Claire of out the hands of Jack Randall, Dougal orders her to marry Jamie. Claire and Jamie's wedding takes place in the same chapel where Claire wed Frank, 200 years later. I think the chapel must have looked like this one.
After returning to Castle Leoch, Claire is tried as a witch. She is accused of summoning animals to attack a priest, killing a baby that was left on top of a hill, and summoning a water horse from the depths of a loch.
Jamie rescues her from the trial, and they go to Lallybroch, where Jamie is laird. We visited this working sheep farm. Would Lallybroch have looked something like this?
Lallybroch had a pigeon house, or ducat, like this one. | Jamie loved being the laird of Lallybroch. Claire said it was what he was born to do.
Jamie is captured by English soldiers and sentenced to hang. Claire rescues him from prison, but they cannot return to Lallybroch. They decide to go to France to try to stop the Jacobite Rising that will lead to Culloden, | The Jacobite moment gained ground, despite their efforts. This is Jacobite crystal.
Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard here, at Glenfinnan. Can't you just see the Highlanders gathering here? A statue of a Highlander stands at this spot to commemorate all the men that stood with Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
Try as they might, Claire and Jamie could not stop the Battle of Culloden from happening.
This is Culloden Battlefield. The fateful battle took place on April 16, 1746.
This path marks where the front lines of the Jacobite side stood. | The Highlanders stood on the battlefield, looking out at their home.
This is Culloden House, where the prince was during the battle. | This marker shows were the men of the Fraser clan lined up. According to our audio guide, the Frasers were the first to enter the battle. | They say he believed he could not fail.
The Highland clans were slaughtered in the battle.
Claire went back through the stones because she was sure Jamie would die.
As it turns out, Jamie survived. Claire finds out when, 20 years later, she finds his gravestone in a Scottish churchyard like this one.
She goes back through the stones and finds Jamie's print shop in a small street in Edinburgh.
Claire and Jamie return to Lallybroch for a short time. They take young Ian with them to the coast in search of the Silkie treasure.
While Ian is swimming for the treasure in waters like these, he is kidnapped. Claire and Jamie set out to rescue him, leaving the Highlands behind them... ...for now.
