FC: Paradise, Hawaiian Style
1: On our way!
3: We can see land after 5 hours
5: Lei at the airport
7: Scenery on the road to our condo. Mountains had wind turbines on top. Plants were taro, a national staple of all the Hawaiian Islands. On the other page were some store fronts coming out of the airport.
8: On the road. We had to pass through a tunnel.
12: Our first Beach Resort
25: Lighting of the torches happens every night. The conch shell is blown and someone comes and lights the tens of torches.
28: And the sun begins to set.
34: Iao Needle (Kukaemoku) This impressive spire juts 2,250 feet above sea level. This is the spot of the battle of of Kepaniwai where Kamehameha I conquered the Maui army in 1790 as part of his unification of the Hawaiian Islands. The drive to the valley is an abrupt transition from town to wild and most people don't know they are suddenly in a rain forest. It is a beautiful site and very peaceful.
39: Rain forest fauna.
43: Valley of the Kings
64: The Pier
65: The ships, dinner cruises, and fishing vessels line up here
82: The Road to Hana It's not about the destination, It's the journey. It is 52 miles of very windy road, with over 50 one--lane bridges and in some places the road is only one lane. There are many waterfalls and beautiful greenery. It took us over 8 hours to drive it and back.
83: The first stop. This is the beginning of our 1 mile walk to see the Sister Falls.
