FC: Riviera Maya, Mexico 2008
A week in paradise! Headed to the Riviera Maya in Mexico, Danon and Deb flew out of Minneapolis and Laurie flew out of Kansas City with everyone landing in Cancun at approximately the same time. What we did not anticipate, however, was the fact that Cancun has three terminals at their airport and we didn't land at the same one! While searching for everyone, we of course, missed our bus, but needless to say with a lot of conniving of the transportation companies, we all managed to get to the resort. Once we all arrived at the resort, it was a week of glorious fun, excitement and with the three of us - more chaos!
 OUR OWN
 Occidental Grand Xcaret Resort
Our resort is attached to the Xcaret Adventure Park. Once we arrived we went up in a ride that took us up very high on the outside of a tower, kind of like the space needle in Seattle. We were able to look out for miles and see a great amount of our resort and the huge tropical forests surrounding it. The park hosts a wild bird breeding aviary, a sea turtle conservation where 220,000 turtles are released every year, a botanical garden with over 118,000 plants and 49 different orchid species, the largest butterfly pavilion in the world and one of the most productive
dolphin reproduction programs in the world. Xcaret Park also has the ultimate entertainment. We strapped on our life jackets and floated down an under- ground river, under waterfalls and into caverns for over a half mile. It was fascinating. We also went down a river on a raft coasting through many caverns and tropical forests.
Amongst the water adventures, we watched the most exciting acrobat performance and we went through an area filled with many farm-like animals and then through the botanical gardens. | We ended up in an area that was totally a paradise cove! The sands were white and the locals had the most amazing pineapples artfully crafted. It was an amazing fun-filled day!!!
The most idyllic setting in all the world. Xcaret Park
This vacation was an absolute action packed trip! Everyday there was so much to do! Today we decided to take the ferry over to explore Cozumel. The ferry is located in the town of Playa del Carmen. A very interesting and busy port.
We boarded the ferry to cross the Caribbean sea over to Cozumel and was fascinated with being neck to neck with very large ocean liners. We arrived on Cozumel and began exploring. Most of the island that we saw catered to the tourists and was filled with flea markets and restaurants. So much shopping and so little time! | We also explored the beaches and found the most amazing little sea urchins all over the beach. They puffed up into funny little balls when we came around them. We spent an entire day over in Cozumel. What a quaint little Mexican island it is!
We ate lunch at the Hard Rock Café in Cozumel and made friends with the locals! | We stopped for a Coca Cola "Lite" (Diet Coke) at Burger King before we left. | While out shopping, we took a long walk along the beach and looked at the beautiful resorts.
Ferry Terminal in Cozumel | Heading back to Playa del Carmen
Our beautiful resort was located only about 5 miles south of Playa del Carmen, so one evening the three of us decided to take a taxi into town for some fun. Of course, like most tourist towns in Mexico, the main downtown area was really nothing more than a giant flea market. It was a lot of fun though. We walked past the hot spots like Carlos and Charlie's and Senior Frogs, but didn't stop in. They were packed - spilling out onto the beach. We stopped in the center of town in a park for a while just to people watch. While in the park, there was a man with a bunch of monkeys. They were so cute. He let us hold them and pose with them. After walking up and down the streets, checking out all the shops, we came upon several mimes. They were fascinating to watch. It was a great evening and a great week! | Adiós
