BC: Hawaii is one of the most beautiful of the United States. It is full of different cultures, it is the the leading state in biodiversity, and added a fifth star to the US flag. The state is the biggest tourist destination in America, surpassing New York City, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

FC: Hawaii, The 5oth State

1: What do we think about when we think about Hawaii?

2: Surfing? Luas?

3: Beaches? exotic wildlife?

4: But What is Hawaii Really Like? Hawaii became a state in 1959, but has been populated since about 300 BC. The island chain was populated by native Polynesians and for a long period lived in a feudal society ruled by island kings.

5: The islands were first encountered by westerners when Captain Cook found sailed past the islands in 1778. During the next decade large groups of Chines and Japanese immigrants came to the island, and they brought the Buddhist religion with them. Even today Hawaii is home to the largest Buddhist population in the US (per capita).

6: The Hawaiian Islands also have the largest amount of natural diversity in all 50 states. Many plants and animals live on the islands that live nowhere else in the world. | Bamboo forests grow all over the island of Oahu. In many places the forest density is thicker than any of the bamboo forests left in Mongolia or China.

7: Hawaii is also a musical center of the United States. Many artists have gotten there start island hopping between the Hawaiian Islands. Lil' Wayne always makes a stop at the island chain because he loves its beaches and beautiful sights.

8: Hawaii is also a volcanic island chain. The whole group of islands was created over millions of years as lava built up slowly. These mounds of lava slowly grew until each island was created. The chain of islands was created as oceanic plates moved, creating lava mounds in different locations.

12: Hawaii voted overwhelmingly for Obama in 2008. | In the primaries the islands went for Clinton, but rallied behind Obama later in the year.

13: The Islands are home to a large Pearl harbor memorial and cemetery. | One of these is located directly behind a large Shinto temple. Shinto is a traditional Japanese religion. The

14: Surfing is an integral part of Hawaiian culture. | More than just a pleasure sport, surfing was originally a way that tribesmen could send messages between islands.

18: Hawaii is a very spectacular state, different from any other in the Union. Its been around the least amount of time, but is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the entire US. Despite this, many of the local people there live in poverty. Away from the tourist centers the urban poor live in project high rises and street crime is rampant. Hawaii is a land of contrast.
