S: Washington D.C. April 2011
BC: Is it really over already?
April 2011 We are off to visit Uncle Dave in Washington D.C. with Gamma and Papa!! | This was Kyla and Colby's first time on an airplane. They did GREAT!!
 Our home away from home
Uncle Dave found this amazing house to stay in...2 stories, with a balcony and boat dock. It sat facing the Potomac River and was big enough for the kids to run around like freaks and had a yard big enough for numerous baseball games. | Since Colby wakes up early on any normal day, we were afraid, with the time change, that he would see the sun shining through the floor to ceiling windows and would wake up WAY too early...so we made two beds for him and Kyla and had them "camp out" in Gamma and Papa's walk-in closet. It really didn't work. He was up early playing baseball in the living room every morning.
Our beautiful rental home gave us a place to kick up our feet and relax after a busy day if sight seeing! | Gamma and Papa's room | Kurt and Mel's room
 what a view...
 Cherry blossoms at Arlington
Not many are brave enough to take on this responsibility! | Arlington Cemetary | There are almost no words to describe how it felt to see the hundreds of thousands of graves. | Thank you to all who served and died for our freedom
Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers | Another amazing experience
Changing of the Guards | The kids paying their respect | Guarding these men 24/7
Uncommon valor was a common virtue | What a great tribute...
No Ball Playing blues... | Iwa Jima
Touring D.C. | We spent one day touring various museums, riding the carousel and checking out some landmarks from afar. Krista, Uncle Dave's girlfriend, came with us. | THE MALL | Riding on the Metro
Because we got such a late start getting going, we saw some museums only from the outside. | So much strength holding that big thing up! | Colby holding up the Washington Monument.
We soaked up the sun enjoying views of the Capitol, the Washington Monument and many different museums. We snacked on pretzels and fries while watching the kids on the carousel. | Our little squirrel friend who wouldn't budge. | Deciding which museum to see... | Museum of Natural History
First stop... the Smithsonian. What a beautiful building!
Beautiful flowers too! | So many cool bones! | We spent time in the Smithsonian Museum checking out the butterfly and bones exhibits. We even saw the Hope Diamond! | Butterfly on Andrew's hat | It liked Mom's hair too!
Gamma and Kyla | The Hope Diamond | Andrew was loved by the butterflies! | Checkin' out the giraffe bones! | Since Kyla just got done studying butterflies, this was her favorite exhibit. | Kyla's Favorite
Checking out the displays | Watching a demonstration on space travel | Kids bein' kids
Air and Space Museum | Enjoying all the planes | "flying"
Lovin' the Air and Space Museum. Uncle Dave, Krista, Andrew and Colby even rode in a flight simulator.
Krista and Kyla bought Astronaut ice cream too. Yumm!
David called for reservations at the Gadsby's Tavern and they were about to close, but they told us they would wait if we hurried. By the time we got there we were the only ones in the place so the workers sat down and talked to us, sharing drinks and stories about the hauntings that have occurred. The food was great, company even better and the stories, intriguing! I would definitely go back here again some day, especially to see more of the haunted museum! | Even the pictures came out a little eerie... love it! | Gadsby's Tavern
We love the beautiful cherry blossom tress and their yummy smell!
Colby "LOVED" the tour. He wanted to know when he could change the station on his headphones to music and then when he could eat lunch.
 CAPITOL TOUR
GO WASHINGTON NATIONALS! | We headed down to Nationals stadium to watch D.C. beat the Phillies. We were FREEZING!!!
7th inning stretch, popcorn, chili dogs and lots of cheering! Too much fun!
We were so tiny compared to the 555ft. monument!!
 WASHINGTON MONUMENT
Kurt and Andrew spent an entire day fishing off the dock. Andrew caught this catfish within minutes of starting.
World War II Memorial | Colby paying his respects by sticking his hand in the water.
It was a beautiful day to reflect on the many lives lost.
The Vietnam Memorial | Another tribute to our fallen soldiers
Posing in front of the Lincoln memorial
 The Lincoln Memorial
A view from the Washington Monument | Gamma enjoyed the shade while we checked out the sites.
The White House | We had a great view of the snipers on the roof as well.
When we showed up at the White House, Marine One was dropping President Obama off. We had a great view and then got to move in closer for some pictures.
We couldn't decide where to eat, so we searched for a good Mexican restaurant. We found this total dive that had such yummy food!! | Las Carnitas
Colby wants to be a soldier now. | We got to see his office, eat lunch and meet General Schwartz, Air Force Chief of Staff. | The Pentagon | We went to visit Uncle Dave at his work. He took us on an exclusive tour. | Las Carnitas
There is no better view of the Woodrow Wilson Memorial bridge than from the boat. | Where is Gamma? Safe and warm inside the boat!
 Water Taxi to Maryland
This sculpture was pretty cool from a distance, even more fun once we set foot on land. The kids loved using the mouth as a hiding spot and the leg as a slide.
THE PEEPS STORE | Only in Maryland...and who knew you could spend so much money on marshmallows and sugar?
