So I have just one story that I want to share. I'm sure a few of us remember that red Mazda MX6 that Chris used to drive. That car was his baby, and it was rare for him to leave it in the care of my mother. Of course it was one of those rare days that we got into an accident. It wasn't much more than a golf ball sized dent, but I was in a state of panic, certain that Chris would take what was left of his car and disappear forever. | We have all come together this evening in celebration of a couple that I'm proud to call my parents. It makes me overwhelmingly happy to see them here today, and above all, this day proves that anything worth having is worth waiting for.
Well to my great surprise, when we showed him he sighed and then pretty much shrugged and went on with his day. It was then that I realized that Chris loved my mom more than his car. There is one very amazing thing that has occurred to me in the days leading up to this wedding. It is the certainty that the best moments of their lives still lay ahead of them. Though they have both led such interesting and prosperous lives up to this point, when I see them now, what I see is a young couple with their best days still to come. It is my absolute honor to give this toast to the amazing future that lies ahead of them. Here's to the couple of the night. Thank-you for being such amazing parents and I love you both.
I immediately started wracking my brain to find that one, succinct word that described what I felt when Lisa and Chris announced that they got engaged ..and I think you will probably all agree with me when I say that..that one word is..FINALLY! Yes .they have been together now for quite awhile. Not so long ago though, that I couldn’t remember back to when they first started dating, she and I were on the phone, chatting like sisters do and I was probing her about what he was like, and what it was she liked about him..and she said “For one thing, he has a really big.” And then she hesitated all shy and embarrassed or something, and I said “WHAT???” | Good evening everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, I am Lisa’s sister Kim, and for those of you who do know me..please take that worried look off your face! I was very honored and touched when Lisa asked me to be her Matron of Honor – it really does mean so very much to me. So having been given this role of matron of honor, I realized I would have to give a few words here tonight ..and knowing Lisa wanted this to be short and sweet..
and so she starts up again. “Well, for one thing, he has a really big.vegetable garden in his backyard!” and it was true. I saw it my self at his old place on Coronation St. , and Ladies and Gentlemen, I think that gives support to the theory that some of us hold – that some women seek out men who remind them of their fathers.(and perhaps the reason why the mother-of-the-bride always cries at weddings).I know that Chris has many wonderful qualities, but I do think Chris’s cultivation skills was what probably sealed the deal for Lisa way back then. Today my sister got married to a wonderful man. (Thanks Chris for doing that! You have been part of our family for a long time, but on behalf of all of us, we are glad you made it official) Chris, you and I, and many people here know Lisa for her many qualities. She is – Beautiful, Generous & kind, Funny, Ambitious, Successful & smart, A natural athlete, A devoted daughter, A dedicated mother, The best sister a woman could ask for. But more than that, she is my very best friend. She’s definitely a friend worth having. On your wedding day, I’d like to tell you that I believe when two people get married it has a positive effect on those around them. It brings joy to those who have already said, “I do” as they fondly remember their own wedding day. (I know it does for me). It brings hope to those who are still looking for that special someone. And it shows a younger generation what they have to look forward to when they meet that perfect someone. You bring happiness to those who are here to celebrate with you and also those who couldn't be here, but who you carry in your hearts. Separately, you are two special, remarkable people, but together you are complete. My love to the both of you.
Teasing aside though, I have to say that it's been my great good fortune to have had Chris as my best friend for 36 years now. We've followed each other through all of life's changes and challenges:we've enjoyed a friendly rivalry and competition in many sports and we've been on over 60 hiking trips. So I know that he has many qualities beyond that of a Golden Retriever. He is the epitome of a stand up guy. He's very tech-savvy,which is great for the techno-challenged like me. He's a great pilot for JAZZ, though as a passenger, he prefers WEST-JET-like normal people! He has a great sense of humor, which I was literally on the receiving end of on our very first camping trip 30 years ago We were enjoying the last coals of the campfire when I said I was tired and was going to bed. Chris said he would make sure the fire was out before he went to bed. I had just settled into my sleeping bag and was watching the stars when a cloud of steam slowly began to wash over me. Chris was laughing his head off and you can imagine my horror when I saw how he was putting out the fire! He also has a keen artistic eye as a photographer; he's becoming quite the barbecue chef and have you ever seen such a snappy dresser?? | Thank you,....Hello..Chris may be wondering if I'm going to toast him or roast him, well, maybe something in between...a light grilling perhaps. Now each of you knows Chris in your own way and we all know some things about him in common. We know he's sociable, athletic, loyal, usually in a great mood and totally devoted to family and friends---essentially all of the qualities we admire in a Golden Retriever.........he even has a shiny coat.
Now for all that one might think he would have a bit of an ego, but no he's even quite humble. On the first day we went to the Badminton Club it was a senior's Sunday and we were challenged to a game of doubles by 2 white-haired ladies who than proceeded to kick our butts....I think the score was 15-1 or 2.....did we GET 2 points? Yes, he was very humble then. But one of his qualities I admire most is his deep appreciation for how great his life is! He's always mindful of his freedom in health and time to pursue and enjoy sports, family and friends and of course,Formula One racing. Last week-end was Thanksgiving but Chris is one of those rare individuals who has that sense of thankfulness in every day life. He's always saying how lucky he is. And the day he met Lisa he really got lucky....or maybe it was a few days later! Whenever we're on the subject of relationships he can talk for a good half hour about how great she is! I would have to complain twice as much just to balance out the conversation! I also have some evidence of just how much Lisa must love Chris, aside from the fact that she just married him. For years now she has been enduring something in the bedroom that NO ONE should have to put up with.....something in the bedroom. You see, Chris has an enormous snore. When he gets going he's like a freight train---he's loud and there's no stopping him---so, for her to be willing to stay in the same room with THAT must be a sign of true love!! The only non-glowing thing Chris has ever said about her is that she's not to be rushed in the morning....and by that I presume he meant her getting ready for work .--that's all he's been able to come up with to complain about. Well, that's a kind of cute foible they share because Chris isn't to be rushed in the morning either. On one of our hikes I awoke to fresh snow covering everything and had to spend a good hour gathering enough dry twigs to get a fire going and a pot of coffee boiling. So I called to Chris that he should come get his coffee and I would look for more wood. So he crawls out of his tent, stumbles over to the fire, tries to step over the fire but kicks over the coffee pot and extinguishes the fire, all in one fell swoop. So now would you all please join me in raising your glasses and toasting to their continuing happiness and leisurely mornings......to Chris and Lisa!!!
