27: ‘Twas the Night Before Playoffs, when all through the town Not a Hog was still stirring, Not even Josh Brown; The sweaty pads hung Outside for fresh air, In hopes that the Playoff Gods Soon would be there. The Black Knights were nestled All snug in their beds, While visions of Gomes attacks Danced in their heads; With moms in their T-shirts And siblings in caps, We’re all settled down For Kentucky we need naps. When out on the field There rose such a clatter, We sprang from our seatsTo see what was the matter. The Knights are descending, They’re making a beeline, D.J.-Sack-Master-David And the Furious D-Line. We’ve come so close here, Too far to turn back, Especially not now Thanks to Rookie Kovacs. When, what to our wondering eyes Should appear, Abruzzo, Herda, Valle, All awesome first year! With some little old coaches So lively and quick, Julio, Ken, Ed, And 2 Garys—one “crisp”. More rapid than eagles Our running backs came, And we whistled, and shouted, And called them by name— “Now, Thunder! Now, Lightning! Now, Korpela and Buza! On, Herda! On, Kovacs! On, Abruzzo and Salooga! To the top of the end zone Through the defensive wall! Now, dash away! Dash away! Dash away, Partoll!” As dry leaves before Hog hurricanes fly, When they meet with an obstacle, The score is a tie. So up to the scrimmage line, The Wild Hogs flew, With smack-downs from Sean Bell, And Jake Rogers too; And then in a twinkling We heard on the field, The prancing and pawing Of our opponent’s yield. As we drew in our heads And were turning around, Down the field the Black Knights Came with a bound! They were dressed black and silver From their head to their foot, And their jerseys were covered In mud and in soot. A bundle of touchdowns No need to talk smack, And they moved like Dick Butkus A Defensive attack. This team is a family Together they’re workin’, Our linemen so fierce Vanderheyden and Bergmann. Our bench is so deep Bryan, Parks, Mahan, Foster, Substitution’s a breeze No need for a roster. The stump of a mouth guard They hold in their teeth, Their focus encircles Their heads like a wreath. Their helmets in place Under Armour on bellies, Come rain or come shine They get dirty and smelly. Coach Ed makes their movies, He works like an elf, Partoll does the filming The team watches itself. A trouncing on White DeKalb first place dead, Soon gave us to know We had nothing to dread. To beat DeKalb Orange The true panacea, Let’s hope Lightning Diehl Has no diarrhea. Calabrese is our Thunder, Partoll our fast guy, Saloga kicks field goals, Puts fear in their eyes. Hogs 3-Count so clever The ref gave a whistle, The opposition did jump, Encroached like a missile. But we heard them exclaim As they rose to the fight, “Kaneland 9U Black Knights Take no prisoners tonight!” To all 9U Black Knights — Thank you for making this football season such a joy for Ian and the Diehl family, and, as always, Thank you coaches for all that you do. You are the best! Go Get ‘Em!!!! Respectfully, Kristin Diehl | ‘Twas the Night Before Playoffs
