40: Coaches Comments | What is a successful season? The answers will very on who you ask. The ruler I measure success is not measured in wins or goals, but in personal improvement and teaching the game I love - Hockey. When I look back on the 2009-2010 Razor Shark season, these will be the things I will remember: Mitch - His tennis shoe socks. We were getting ready in Redford before a game and I looked down and saw the funniest looking shoes I have ever seen. Upon a closer look it was Mitch’s socks with a tennis shoe print on them. – Too Cool Fitz’s – Big Fitz. I have never been a big believer in saying give a 110%, mathematically the most you can give is 100%. This has all changed after meeting Big Fitz. He gives more then he has. Early in the season after doing the “Razor”, Fitz’s was leaning against the boards just dying. I asked “Fitz’s do you have anything left?” His arm went up in the air and said “ya coachI’ll beright there.” Eric - The strong silent type. Eric always has a look on his face like he knows something you don’t. This is a great look to have when you are a ‘D-man’. Defensemen never get the glory. Eric plays his position with text book precision. He does all the little things that make him a great ‘D-man’. Steven - Just funny. Steve always keeps the locker room fun. After a loss early in the season, the Sharks were pretty down I asked Steven to say something funny. Sure enough within minutes the looker room was filled with laughs. He is a great kid but I am puzzled with his hatred towards my MaMa. Tom Kow asdklajd;lkjfa - It took me half the season to get his last name right. There was a game late in the season when Tom was at the point ready to take the shot. The forward entered the “Kill Zone” and looked up just as Tom was releasing the shot. The look on that forward’s face was priceless. The puck hit him and you just heard Ouuuuuuuch. Alex - “The Goalie”. He is a true goalie. I would ask him questions through out the season like: “Are you tired?“ “Nope” “Are you hurt?” “Nope” “Was that a hard shot?” ”Nope”. Never showing signs of weakness. A true goalie. We had a Plymouth Whaler come out and skated with us. The Whaler came in on Alex tried a tricky move. Alex made a glove save and stoned that Whaler cold. It was awesome! Jay - “The realist”. Jay cuts through the hype and gets to the core of the matter. In the locker room before a game, the Sharks were all saying “we are going to win” and “we are going to kill this team”. This lasted about five minutes. Jay looks up from tying his skate and says “Guys we just can’t say it we have to do it”. I couldn’t have said it any better. Another time a Shark came up with the idea of glow-in-the-dark skate laces. The idea started spreading around the locker room like wildfire. Then Jay asked a very simple question. “Who plays hockey in the dark?” To this day I haven’t heard a peep about glow-in-the-dark laces. Nolan - Defies the Laws of Physics. You learn in school that no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time. Nolan is the exception to this rule. If the other player has the puck, Nolan will enter into that space, occupy it, with no regards to personal safety and break up the play. Another observation, Nolan never gets hurt by the bench, in fact he will get hurt at the furthest point from the bench. I have gotten pretty good at walking on the ice thanks to Nolan. David - We had a practice at U of M’s Yost arena. The Sharks were skating around having fun when I notice Mr. David’s jersey. It had green and white letters with the name SPARTANS on the front. I said if you are going to wear THAT jersey here you can’t goof around. It was the best practice he had. Matthew - I was reading out the goals and assists to the team in the locker room. I was saving Mathews for last. At the time he had around 40 goals and a ton of assists. I read out his as 2 goals and 1 assist. I looked at him a said “Mathew you need to step up your game”. I just watched him as he processed the request. A look came over his face like what are you talking about. The team caught on and was laughing when a big smile came over his face. Wish I had a camera. Max – Watching Max skate is like watching Picasso Paint. He makes it look easy and the results are amazing. There was a game early in the season when Max was coming to their zone with the puck. Their whole team was there waiting for him. I screamed out “Go to the left”, he went right. I screamed out “go to the outside” he went to the inside. I screamed “go behind the net” he went in front. I screamed “pass the puck” he shot and scored. I said good job Max! I looked at the other coach’s and said it’s all about the coaching. Austin - The Hammer. Every team needs an “Austin”. It’s great as a coach to have that player that loves to hit. There is a saying, find the biggest player on the other team and hit him. Most players say it, Austin lives it. During a game, the other team’s biggest player got the puck and started coming into our zone. He didn’t see Austin (mistake #1), he came in with his head down (mistake #2), when he finally saw Austin he didn’t respect him (mistake #3), Austin CREAMED him. One of the best hits of the season. Andrew - I have had the pleasure to be on a couple of teams with Andrew. He is a solid meat and potato’s hockey player. He shows up ready to play doesn’t need any RA-RA speeches. He has a job and is ready to do it. Late in the season, Andrew was parked out front of the net, the puck came over to him and he just BURIED it, by the time the goalie figured out what happened, Andrew had his arms in the air and his teammates were congratulating him. Amanda - During the season you find out how tough your players are. I would put Amanda top of the list. During a mid-season game, Amanda was skating the puck about 2 feet away for the boards. The biggest player in the league took a run at her hitting her into the boards. Amanda got up and skated to the bench. I had a parent say how proud he was and if that was his son they would have had to medovac him to the hospital. Thanks to everyone that has made this season great, Coach Chris
