FC: My Virtual Child Part 1 | “The path of development is a journey of discovery that is clear only in retrospect, and it's rarely a straight line.” --Eileen Kennedy

My virtual child,Jimmy, had a normal birth. We were amazed that my partner and I had brought this new being to the existence.

After only a week with Jimmy, I can already feel a hormonal connection.

Jimmy's crying is rhythmic and moderately loud when he is hungry, wet, or cold. If he is startled, there is a sudden intake of breath

Jimmy is able to focus his eyes on me. He spends a lot of time studying my face and the faces of anyone who comes close to him.

Jimmy is now 8 months old. He has been in very good health. He is showing some fearfulness around unfamiliar people. Besides, Jimmy is cautious around new people and situations.

At this age,the children can raise up on arms and knees into crawling position; rocks back and forth, but may not move forward. | They can laugh, babble and smile in response. And they can also imitate sounds, actions and facial expressions made by others. | They can explore objects by touching , shaking ,banging ,and mouthing; they focus eyes on small objects and reach for them | Therefore my child's physical, emotional/social and intellectual development meets the milestones very well.

As we make objective observations, we can find out children's levels of cognitive ,social and physical development . And we can get to know their interests and preferences , and their personalities and temperaments as well. As a future early childhood educator, we should try to improve the ability of objective observation, so that we can use proper strategies to scaffold their learning and develop curriculum which is based on their interests and developmental levels.

As I raise my virtual child, I observe and document his development in the areas of physical, social and intellectual at each stage. Then I compare his developmental levels with milestones at corresponding stages to see if he is in the range of the normality and what strategies I can use to promote his development.

Raising a virtual child has given me the opportunity to learn how a child develop from birth to 12 years old. And I also learned how to assess his development and see if he meets the milestones in all the domains at different stages, and how to use parenting strategies as well. | "During the earliest stages the child perceives things like a solipsist who is unaware of himself as subject and is familiar only with his own actions." --Jean Piaget

This assignment allows me to explore the role of parents and teachers. As a parent,I should promote my child's development in the areas of physical, social and intellectual; implement proper safety and health practice. As a teacher, I should understand and respond to the children's physical and emotional needs . Respect individuality and differences; use proper strategies to scaffold their learning.
