FC: And how do they connect in the classroom? | What is Social Literacy? What is digital Literacy?

2: Social Literacy is the networking and collaboration amongst peers. This includes communicating, self expression and sharing. In most cases, social literacy includes the Internet. A great aspect about social literacy is that instead of working with peers directly surrounding the user, it allows for him/her to connect with peers on a global level.

5: A good example of social literacy would be social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogging, Google docs, Wonderwalls and the ability to tag photos, Skype. As previously discussed a large part of social literacy is sharing. By using these websites you are able to share and connect with people everywhere. These websites also provides new forms of communication. Instead of making a phone call, an individual could video chat, or communicate via these websites.

6: Blogs in the Classroom.

7: Blogging can be a great resource in the classroom. A blog is a website where a user can post updates, ideas, etc. It is actually similar to a diary. This would be extremely beneficial for the classroom because the teacher could post the homework for the day, what was done in the class. It is a great way for parents and teachers to stay connected. Another way that a blog could be used in the classroom is for the students to post blogs about their learning, projects, something they would like to learn about in the future.

8: Skype

9: Skype is a website that allows for video-conferencing and phone calls. If two computers have cameras on them individuals are able to see and hear each other. This could be used in the classroom in several different ways. If a student is absent the teacher could Skype with a student in order to explain what they missed. The teacher could set up a time to be available on Skype for homework questions. Classmates can also Skype each other for questions or group projects.

10: A classroom website would be extremely beneficial in the classroom. The teacher can make their own website on a site such as googlesites, or weebly. The teacher can post projects, classroom updates, curriculum materials, homework, permission slips etc. on the website and the parents and students can access the resources at anytime | Classroom Website

11: Google Docs are basically the same thing as a word document, however it is online. Based on the privacy settings of the document, anyone can have access to the document to edit, review, and post their own ideas. This would be great in the classroom for projects. It allows for the students in a group to post their ideas and edit the project. Google documents is strictly word documents either. There are pictures, presentations etc. The students could write a paper on a Google Document and the teacher could edit the students papers. | Google Docs

12: Facebook is a website in which photos, messages, statuses etc. can be posted and shared. A group can be made in order to share information. This could be used in the classroom to share photos from field trips, in class activities. Students could also post questions and receive answers from others students as well as teachers. One draw back to Facebook is the user must be 13 years old and up.

13: Twitter is a website that allows for posting of statuses, ideas and thoughts. Teachers could post updates to their students, post specifically to one of their students. The students could also connect with their students by posting to each other, and answering each others questions

14: Digital Literacy A large aspect of Social Literacy is Digital Literacy. Digital Literacy is the ability to navigate the computer and the internet, analyze the information found, and finding the best way to present the information found on the internet.

15: Combining Social and Digital Literacy | Social and Digital literacy can be combined in order to use in the classroom. Each of the previous websites discussed teach both social and digital literacy. Digital and Social Literacy together allow for a global connection, communication, computer skills and also build on traditional literacy. Mixbook is a great example of both digital and social literacy.

16: Which would I use?

17: In my classroom, I would not use Mixbook. It was very slow and sometimes difficult to maneuver. In my classroom I would first use a classroom website because you are able to post almost anything on it. It can provide so many resources for the stuents and parents. The other media I would use in my classroom is a blog. This way students can find out what they missed if they were absent, and parents can find a detailed explanation of their child's day.
