2: 2 | In our family, the appetizers are just as important as the main course. It's a great excuse to eat some good food, have a few drinks and catch up with everyone.
3: 3 | 1/3 cup instant coffee 2 cups light brown sugar 2 cups boiling water 1 pint vodka 1 1/2 oz. vanilla Dissolve sugar and coffee in hot water. Add vanilla. Let cool completely. Add vodka. Let stand at least one week. | Grandma's Kaluah | Grandma enjoying a drink with the boys who came home with Joe on leave. Don't worry Shelly, those beers are empty!

8: FAMILY FAVORITES | Polynesian Potroast (Beef) 3-4 pounds beef chuck roast 1 large onion, slice and separated into rings 1 cup canned pineapple juice 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 1/2 teaspoons ginger 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 stalks celery, sliced diagonally 4 carrots, sliced paper thin lengthwise 1/2 pound spinach, cleaned and stems removed 4 fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoons cold water 1. Cover beef with onion in shalow pan, pour pineapple juice, soy sauce, ginger and salt over, let stand 1 hour. 2. Place onions and meet in dutch oven; pour pineapple mixture over. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until meat is tender when pierced. 3. Reduce heat. Add celery and carrots. Simmer 10 minutes longer. Arrange spinach and mushrooms on top. Cook 5 minutes longer or until spinach is wilted. 4. Remove meat and vegetables. Mix cornstarch and water into paste and add to juices. Stir constantly and cook until boiling. Serve with roast.

13: Pumpkin Bread 2/3 c. shortening 4 eggs 2/3 c. water 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 c. walnuts 2 2/3 c. sugar 1 lb. can pumpkin 2 1/2 c. flour 2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 2/3 c. raising grated peel of one orange Mix all ingredients and bake in 2 ungreased loaf pans for 1 hour at 350 deg. -Mary Schiendle
