1: Philosophy of Art Education Erica Lundberg I believe that all children are capable of creating art. It is my belief that each child possesses learning skills along with art skills that can be improved upon. The challenges I will face as a teacher will be to provide art experiences that are intellectually sound, personally rewarding to the children, and relevant to their lives. As an art educator, I will strive for students to become independent in their own art experiences that would then transfer to independence in all other areas of their life. I believe the role art plays in schools is an important factor to the overall development of the child. The intellectual, emotional, physical, and creative process involved in producing art helps children to achieve an integrated, well-rounded personality. The learning of art and the process of creating art helps to develop the child’s identity and openness to experience. Also, I feel art helps children to appreciate the artistry in varied lifestyles and to wisely shape their own. Art in the school setting helps to create multicultural diversity amongst the students through celebrating and studying the various art forms of particular cultures. Art also plays an important role in creative self-expression. This allows students the freedom of expression and to create art that flows with their feelings. Art is a means for children to give expression to their experiences in a creative manner. This could also mean that it is free from adult standards. Through my experiences I have found that to some students the art room is a safe haven. It is in the art room that students are free to express themselves through art. They are free to express and release in art their feelings on that particular day without the worry of judgment that would be imposed upon them in a traditional classroom setting. I feel that there are few opportunities for children to express how their life feels, to discover what its special meanings are, or to comprehend why their life is like no one else’s. I believe that art education can allow children to explore and acquaint themselves with more feelings and personal images of the human spirit than they are likely to discover on their own. I strongly believe that personal development through art is as important as learning about art. I believe that as an art educator it will be important for me to create these opportunities. My main focus will be to create an environment where students can express themselves creatively without judgment and to learn about art through art.
