1: History of Hot Air Balloons | On the 19th September 1783 Pilatre De Rozier, a scientist, launched the first hot air balloon. The passengers were a sheep, a duck and a rooster! The balloon stayed in the air for a grand total of 15 minutes before crashing back to the ground.
2: 2 years later in 1785 a French balloonist, Jean Pierre Blanchard, and his American co pilot, John Jefferies, became the first to fly across the English Channel. In the early days of ballooning, the English Channel was considered the first step to long distance ballooning so this was a big accomplishment in ballooning history. | History
3: History continued... | In the same year the world's first balloonist was killed iwhile trying to cross the channel. His balloon exploded half an hour after taking off because of the experimental design of using a hydrogen balloon and hot air balloon tied together.
4: The next major time in balloon history was on January 7th 1793. Jean Pierre Blanchard was the first to fly a hot air balloon in North America. (George Washington was present to see the balloon launch!)
5: A 100 years later in August of 1932 a swiss scientist named Auguste Piccard was the first to achieve a flight to the Stratosphere (reaching a height of 52,498 feet) setting a new altitude record. Over the next couple of years, altitude records continued to be set and broken every couple of months. The race began to see who would reach the highest point!
6: Equipment needed | The main equipment needed for hot air ballooning is the balloon, which is made from a special fire-resistant material known as the rip-stop nylon. Load tape, steel wire ropes, basket/gondola, an altimeter, a compass, cylinders of propane or butane gas, burners, and ropes are all required for ballooning.
7: Load tape- vertical seams along the length of the envelope, connected by the load cables to the basket. The actual load-bearing parts of the envelope. basket- the part of the balloon used to carry the pilot and passengers, fuel tanks, and other equipment. altimeter- tells you how high you are burner- device used to ignite and project flammable fuel (usually propane gas) up into the envelope to heat the air in the balloon
