S: Mike's Second Grade
FC: Michael Firestine | "Let us realize that the privilege to learn is a gift, that power to learn is a blessing, that love of learning is success. | Look what I learned!
 Mike's Middle Ages
We began to learn about the Middle Ages and the people of that time. We made a crown and a royal mace for King Mikey. See his sister bowing?!
In the ancient city of Rome there lived a humble and gentle man. His clothes were not as fine as the nobleman's and his leather sandals were worn thin. He did not live in a grand house made of smooth marble, but in a small dwelling in a crowded part of the city. The man's friends and neighbors called him Valentine | "Blessed are you among all women," she said to Mary, "and blessed is your holy child."....Brigid's awe was broken by the soft voice of Mary. "Thank you, child of the West," she said, then she handed Brigid's cloak to Joseph, who placed it around Brigid's shoulders, "Your generosity will be remembered always," he added. | We read picture books based on St. Valentine and St. Brigid
Some of the Evidence left behind are coins. We made our coins from clay. Even Kris got into the act.
We made a castle... | and a catapult.
We also learned more about some of the people of the time, and how they lived.
We made a Firestine shield. Each section represents one of us. A computer for Dad, a book for Mom (I read, and I'm the teacher), Music for Kris and a game controller for Mike! There were other things we could have added, but you can only fit so much!
We also learned that not every one knows the one true God. We must pray for the lost.
It took two weeks to complete our "For All" diarama, in the mean time, we learned about the Vikings.
We made our people, sheep and hovel out of clay and our furniture out of cardboard.
Mike really enjoyed the game we made and played. He loves logic type games, he even beat me.
9 Men's Morris Take turns putting one piece at a time on the board. you can only put them on the dots. Both players try to make a mill-three men in a row. Whenever a player makes a mill, he takes one of the others player's men off the board. After all pieces are on the board, you can use your turn to move a piece to a different dot. You can only move your pieces along a line to get to the next dot. The game is over when one player has only 2 men left.
We made a printing press with alphabet noodles, unfortunately, we never got it to print. For some reason the ink would dry too fast on the noodles
Oh well, he had fun trying!
We read about the long route that silk traveled.
We also read about Joan of Arc, who was visited by an angel. Not just any angel though, Michael's name sake, the warrior angel of heaven!
Overall, a good couple weeks, although we slacked off some on the hands-on projects. We'll have to work on that!
We finished up our study of the Middle Ages and began to discuss the Renaissance and reformation. Since we spent a lot of time talking about knights, we discussed what it means to be a Modern Day Knight. Mike wrote his knight code, with some explanation of each part.
History isn't the only thing we do though! Here are some pics from field trips and stuff!
Bethpage Village Fair, Apple Picking, Children's Museum, Archery, Queens Science Museum
 Apple Picking!
 Children's Museum
The Archery field trip was a big hit ! I carefully explained to Michael ahead of time that archery is hard and not to get upset if he has trouble. Um....guess not. He did awesome!
After the crowd thinned out Mike liked programming the model of the Mars Rover
We also do Science projects and art stuff. | Painting upside down, like Michaelangelo.
For the Art show this year, Mike showed off some of his Lego creations.
We made a scale model Solar system. Each marble was correctly placed in inches to represent the distance between them! | The blue marble is Jupiter. Mike is pointing to Mars, way back on the other side of the basement
OK, so in the above picture Mike is pointing to Jupiter, the marble surrounded by green is Saturn and the pic was taken from Uranus. Picture at right is sitting on Saturn looking toward Uranus (speck just above the "a" in print). Neptune and Pluto didn't make the room, they are in the garage and the neighbors house. | Uranus
After we finished out Astronomy text book, we did some learning with Legos. First we studied architecture. The pic on this page represents Mike's blueprint for a Doctors office. Notice the two bathrooms on the bottom right, the waiting rooms (sick and well) to the left. The examine rooms are on the top left, with an office and storage space to the top right.
This page is a blueprint of a Pizzeria. The kitchen is to the back, with a large freezer and storage areas. To the front left is the order desk. Various size tables are spread throughout the restaurant and there is even outdoor seating with a play structure to the front right for the kids.
He then built a Lego replica of the Sears tower and the Eiffel Tower. AFter architecture we moved on the Mechanical engineering with legos. He learned about belts and pulleys making a conveyor belt and a battery powered buggy. This is the way to learn as far as mike's concerned!
