1: President Jefferson wanted to explore the new land he had bought. He did it so people could settle there. What he needed was a person for the job. | Lewis and Clark stepped up to the task. Then, along with their companions, they traveled up the Missouri River to explore the new land. At the end of the trip they reached the Pacific Ocean. | Sacagawea was a captured Indian who helped Lewis and Clark so much. She guided the way through the rough terain that she remembered as a child. She translated the Indian language so they could understand the Indian they met.
2: As the west was expanding people were getting ideas. They started to build factories to mass produce. Most of the workers were children and poor people. they didn't get payed much. The British tried to keep their factories a secret from other countries. | Ideas
3: Many settlers wanted to relocate the Indians from the south. President Jackson supported what the colonists wanted. | In 1830, the government started to pay the Indians to move west. The Indians didn't want to move. The government convinced some tribes to sign treaties. General Winfield Scott took an army and threatened to use force if they wouldn't move. In the end they all left.
4: Mountain men were the explorers of the west. They went all the way to Oregon to trap beavers and trade fur. They survived on the land and took many native ideas to stay alive. | The American Fur Company became the most powerful fur company in America. It was able to trade with the East Coast, the Pacific Northwest, and China. They started to trade from Indians but grew to the mountain men. | Geographical
5: In the 1830's many people were moving to Oregon. The new settlers brought measles to the new western land. This killed many of the native children. The Indians blamed the white people and attacked and killed them.
6: The Indians and Americans have had good and bad relationships. At first they were trying to make friends when they came to the new land but as they settled in they decided to push them aside. This was seen in the trail of tears. | Social
7: In 1836, Santa Anna marched an army north and found a small fort called the Alamo. The army, after 12 days, left no man alive. A few women, children and servants got away.
8: Political | In 1828, Jackson took the role of presidency from Adams. | In 1824, there was an election. It was between Jackson, Clay, Crawford, and Adams. Adams won but Jackson accused him of making a "corrupt bargain". This "corrupt bargain" cast a shadow over his presidency.
9: Jackson was a person America admired; a patriot, and a war hero. His nick name was "Old Hickory" because he was tough, like a hickory stick. | John Adams ran against popular opinions. He wanted a stronger navy and government. Congress turned down many of his ideas.
10: Economic | While Jackson was the president he was fighting a war with the bank. The bank was owned by wealthy Easterners who gave no power to the American people. Two senators used the bank to defeat Jackson in the next election. Their strategy got Jackson off the presidency.
11: 80,000 went to California to look for the precious gold. People took about 6 mill. from the American river by the time it was done.
12: Cultural | California was getting a lot of Spanish settlers who were on a mission to have Mexican culture in California. While doing this they farmed and thousands of acres and worked as weavers.
13: As technology was growing people were making factories. Before factories everything was made on farms or shops one at a time. Now with factories they could make things faster and cheaper using kids and poor families. | Technological

15: How does the past help us make sence of the present?-We can predict what might because it started like this before. How did people in the past view their world?-Like it was the one power in the world. What were the cause of past events?-People making decisions. What has remained the same?-War.
