FC: MY TRIP TO AMERICA

1: My name was Nikolas Cheiler. I was born August 27, 1897. I am now beginning the journey to the United States from my small town in Germany. It is now 1913 and my father went ahead to find a job and a place to live in the USA. My mother, older sister and I are on our way to meet him at Ellis Island. First day of travel. We had just boarded the ship called the Vineta. The ship was small and was very crowded. Once we had left the shore with our few pieces of luggage on board, we were headed for a new life. I didn’t know what to think. I would finally see my father and have a new place to live. On the ship. It is now the third day on the ship and I have had seasickness constantly. People have been tightly packed together for a weeks. I had figured out that the longer that I slept the sooner I would arrive at Ellis Island. Sight of the new land. People are crowding the deck of the boat and are struggling to see the Statue of Liberty. Arriving at Ellis Island. Our boat has finally arrived at the port where we walk down into a baggage room. I saw so many belongings sitting in crates or tied together waiting to be claimed. The next step was to go up long stairs. Some people that were having trouble climbing the stairs were being marked with white chalk. Once we got to the top of the big stairway, we came to a huge room with people being checked by doctors. Once my sister and I were done we went into a huge room to wait for my Mother to be finished and for our turn to be questioned for information about where we had lived before and where we were going to live in the United States. For at least 5 hours we sat in the Great Hall. We went to get our money exchanged from German money into dollars and nickels and pennies. None of us knew the value of each piece of money but the man said that we had twenty-three dollars, which is a lot of money in Germany. Finally we were allowed to enter the country. After we had located our luggage we saw our father on the other side of the gate. He had been waiting anxiously for hours to see us.
