FC: Piaget's Development | by Seth Daniels
Sensorimotor | Birth-2 years old. Application of skills and reflexes. "Exist out of sight" Mental manipulation of objects. Recognition of self
PreOperational | 2-7 years old. Imaginary friends and symbolic gestures. Egocentricism - seeing only from their perspective. Everything is alive.
Concrete Operational | 7-11 years old Flexible thinking. Principle of Conservation = quantity not altered by reversible appearance changes. (6 piles of 2 vs 3 piles of 4)
Formal Operational | 11-15 years old Abstract thinking, love, justice, religion. Adult level thinking, despite further physical and cognitive development
Criticisms of Piaget | Piaget derived his theory based mostly on observation of his own 3 kids-a poor sample to conduct observations of. | Not everyone develops the way Piaget observed his subjects to. Some take longer in each stage, while some kids develop cognitively faster than others
