FC: The Life of the Great Thinker By Sahiti & Anum | 469 B.C- 399 B.C
Socrates gave up his private business and life, so he could search for the TRUTH.He believed people could discover truth if they knew how to THINK.
Socrates practiced his father's art and soon made a living out of sculpturing, too. | Socrates was born in 469 B.C. His mother's name was Phaenarete. She was a mid-wife. His father's name was Sothroniscus. He was a sculptor. They were a poor family and relied on the sculpting.
Socrates was married to Xanthippe. She was said to be much younger than him. They had three sons: Lamprocles, Sophroniscus and Menexenus. | Socrates considered discussing philosophy as the only important occupation other than art, his fathers occupation.
PHILOSOPHY | *Socrates walked throughout Athens trying to teach people how to think. *He did it by asking questions. *Each question was designed to teach people how to think. *He made the Socrates method. *The Socrates method led to step-by-step questions until a final conclusion, or truth. *He had two types of Philosophy. The negative and positive.
OSPHY | *In the negative stage, Socrates, approaching his intended pupil in an attitude of assumed ignorance, would begin to ask a question, apparently for his own information. *He would follow this by other questions until his student would at last confess to ignorance of the subject discussed. *Because of the pretended deference which Socrates played to the superior intelligence of his pupil, this stage of the method was called "Socratic Irony." | The Negative Side | The Positive Side | *In the positive stage of the method, once the pupil had acknowledged his ignorance, Socrates would proceed to another series of questions. *That statement expressed the concept of the subject, or the definition. *Knowledge through concepts, or knowledge by definition, is the aim. *The entire process was called, "Hueristic.”
*All Athenians did not like the Socratic method. *Some were pleased but others thought that his idea was dangerous. They did not like how Socrates pointed out their mistakes. * Soon the Athenians began to think of his method as a threat. *Socrates was tried before a judge and 500 citizens. *He defended himself by talking about wealth and goodness. *However, the judge found him guilty and he was sentenced to death. *Socrates had to drink from a glass of poisonous juice.
After his death they regretted killing him, so they put a statue in his honor.
I am a citizen, not of Athens or Greece, but of the world. -Socrates Be as you wish to seem. -Socrates I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing. It is not living that matters, but living rightly. -Socrates If a man is proud of his wealth, he should not be praised until it is known how he employs it. -Socrates | Quotes
