1: Lesson Prepared by Ms. Williamson Covering Third Grade TEKS: Language Arts (b) Knowledge and Skills 1. Reading/Beginning Reading Skills/Phonics A. Common Spelling Patterns (i) Dropping the final e and add endings (ii) doubling final consonants when adding an ending (iii) Changing the final y to i when adding an ending

2: DROPPING RULE | When a root word ends with a "silent e" drop the e before adding a vowel suffix.

3: EXAMPLES make making serve serving come coming like liked hope hopeful | e | "Hey, where did YOU come from?"

4: DOUBLING RULE | When the final syllable of a root word is accented, and it ends with one vowel and one consonant, double the final consonant before adding a suffix.

5: EXAMPLES: hop hopper clip clipper rip ripping grin grinning bat batty | Look! There are TWO of us!

6: "Y" RULE | If the letter before a final "y" is a consonant, the "y" changes to "i" when you add a suffix, except when the suffix begins with "i".

7: EXAMPLES baby babies carry carries hurry hurried worry worried puppy puppies | It takes wisdom to remember all these...
