The kids celebrated their 9th and 5th birthdays with true orange and white spirit.

There's nothing like a house full of energetic kids!

 jacob's 9th birthday | July 13

This year, we started a family tradition of letting the birthday girl or boy choose the activity and a place to eat on his or her actual birthday. For his 9th birthday, Jacob chose to go see Cars 2 in 3D and to go to Steak & Shake for dinner. We had the movie theater all to ourselves, which was great! He picked out a baseball cake to which we added a Braves decoration. Mom attempted to write "Happy Birthday Jacob" on the cake...it's safe to say she won't ever be a cake decorator! For presents, Jacob got some new DS games and money.

For her 5th birthday, Claire chose to go bowling at Pin Strikes! We also ate dinner there. Claire won both of the games we bowled! The kids' favorite activities were the bumper cars and laser tag. Afterwards, we went home for for cake and presents. She got some money as well as a DS game and a few toys. | August 8, 2011

JUST AROUND! | HANGIN' | Can't decide which nickname is better: the "Three Musketeers" or the "Three Stooges"! They really have a lot of fun playing together, but it surely is chaotic! CJ loves playing his drum, but he'd rather play with Jacob and Claire any day. | September 23rd, 2011

CJ loves spending time with his aunt and uncle and getting into whatever they're doing, especially when it's their video games!

 C.J. October 1st, 2011

We visited C.J.'s brother Colton in the NICU. He was born earlier this morning.

Colton James came into the world 2 months early weighing only 3 lbs. 13 oz. He spent the first month of his life in the NICU. His uncle Jacob and aunt Claire couldn't wait for him to come home so they could meet him. | October 1st, 2011

During fall break, we spent a few days in Pigeon Forge, TN and had so much fun at Dollywood! Jacob really wanted to ride the Tennessee Tornado roller coaster, so we did. It was a bumpy ride for sure, and we almost lost our glasses. We stuck to the "kiddie" coaster after that. The kids rode that ride at least 10 times! | Fall Break

Dollywood Pigeon Forge, Tennessee | October 18th, 2011

 October 18th

Fall Break | fun times on

Train Ride | through the Smokies

This is one of our favorite photos from Dollywood. It was such a fun day, the crowd was light (at least in the morning), and it was nice and cool. We ate lunch at Red's Drive-In (a 60's themed diner), walked through Dolly Parton's tour bus, rode lots of rides, and did a little shopping. The street shop with the cool hats was our favorite. Jacob ended up choosing the wonderful cheeseburger hat which he hopes to wear to school one day "if they ever have crazy hat day"! Claire must have been hungry since she tried to eat the hat! Jacob's facial expression is priceless! | October 18th, 2011

More Fun | FALL BREAK | A few days after returning from Pigeon Forge, we made the trip to Atlanta to visit the Children's Museum. It wasn't as impressive as the CDM in Chattanooga, but the kids enjoyed it enough to spend 4 hours there.

Imagine It! Children's Museum of Atlanta | October 21st, 2011

Claire enjoyed dressing up like a princess and pretending she was in her castle. She also had fun painting on the huge white board and playing in the "home living" area. Both kids had fun in the delivery truck with a cool conveyor belt and a loader. | Imagination | Curi | Children's Museum of Atlanta

"Play is the highest form of research." -Albert Einstein | osity | Creativity

The water play area was so neat! We went fishing in the "river" and played in the waterfalls. There was also a cool playground with a treehouse. Of all the attractions at the museum, our favorite was the Tools for Solutions exhibit. We had to move some balls through the contraption by pushing, pulling, and cranking different parts. Then, we had to get the balls out of the water and into a loader crane. "Driving" the crane was awesome!

 Exploration

Some of Claire's artwork and writing from early kindergarten Fall 2011

 October 28th, 2011

Jacob's first field trip in 3rd grade was to Ruby Falls. It was cold, rainy, and foggy on the mountain. First we took an elevator down into the cave, then walked about a mile to the waterfall. The kids walked around the base of the waterfall and enjoyed the changing colors. They had a sack lunch, then Jacob and Mom had a snack at the store and met up with Mrs. White's class in the souvenir shop. They were supposed to visit Rock City the same day, but it was postponed due to the rainy weather.

EXPLORE | Jacob bought Claire a princess hat from the gift shop :)

A perfect day for hanging out at the farm...

Claire's first kindergarten field trip was to the corn maze and pumpkin patch. She made it through the maze quickly and found all of the ink stamp boards. The hayride was a lot of fun except when we passed the cow barn. Yuck. Claire enjoyed playing in the corn, going down the hay slide. and eating lunch with her friends. As they walked to the bus, they got a pumpkin to keep. | ...and enjoying the crisp fall weather. | October 31st 2011

Sims Family Farm & Corn Maze October 31st, 2011

One of Jacob's assignments this year was to write a narrative about the best Halloween he'd ever had. He chose to write about Halloween 2010, which was our first Halloween at our new house. Claire drew a picture and wrote a couple of sentences about Halloween. She wrote that she likes Halloween because it's spooky. That's interesting since she usually doesn't like spooky things.

 November 7th 2012

A week after Colton came home, we had to take him to the ER because his temperature was too low. He was okay though after they warmed him up a little. | Visit to the ER

 Fall-Winter 2011

Claire loves to dance! This was her 3rd dance class and her 2nd time taking jazz/hip-hop. 103: For the first time in 12 years, Mom decided to get some new Christmas decorations. Back in 2000, we bought some inexpensive red and gold ornaments for our first Christmas. Over the years, about half of them broke. It was time for a change. Mom chose a wintry blue and silver theme with a lot of fancy ornaments, snowflake decorations, garland, mantle pieces, a large wreath, shiny bows, and a set of large silver bells as the focal point of the tree. It was a nice change of scenery for the Christmas season! The next big change will hopefully be a 10-12 ft tree to fill up the living room :) | The End Result

Christmas Mall Recital | Hamilton Place Mall December 10th, 2011 | Claire's jazz/hip-hop class danced to "E-mail Santa" on center stage in front of a crowd of hundreds. This was her third mall performance. She was brilliant, of course!

On December 12th, 2011, Jacob tested for his Level 2 Brown Belt in taekwondo. He did his form perfectly and was very confident in his sparring demonstrations. It won't be long before he earns the coveted black belt! | Brown Belt Testing

 December 14th, 2011 | ROCK | CITY

The 3rd grade field trip to Rock City was one of Jacob's favorites. He, Jack, and Preston explored the caves and trails together. Jacob loved the swing-a-long bridge. It was very foggy, so the view from Lover's Leap was not good. We couldn't see anything! The boys had a lot of fun though.

 December 14th 2011

 Claire's Christmas Dance Recital

Memorial Auditorium Chattanooga, Tennessee December 17, 2011

Claire drew this great picture of herself and Jacob opening Christmas presents, and she wrote a few sentences about Christmas.

Third graders do a lot of writing! One of Jacob's assignments was to write a letter to Santa. He also made a wonderful Christmas card for Mom and Dad with some great illustrations of a Christmas tree and a candy cane.

On the last day of school before Christmas break, the kids had their class parties. Claire made a gingerbread house out of graham crackers, icing, and candy. Jacob goofed off with his friends. Everyone was so excited about being out of school for Christmas! | December 20th

In their hearts we find its meaning." - Leland Thomas

There was truly an abundance of gift-giving in our house this Christmas. Jacob was excited about his new focus target, and Claire was thrilled to get a mini pillow pet. CJ couldn't decide which new toy to play with, although he seemed to prefer the ones with wheels. Of course, he was happy playing with his feet too. Colton wasn't sure what to think about all of the commotion.

They both agree that their favorite gift this year was the XBOX 360. | Claire and Jacob have never been more excited than when they opened their last gift...

excitement | A feeling of great enthusiasm and eagerness | Christmas 2011

Christmas evening, Nana and Papaw came over to celebrate even more Christmas with us. We ate, opened presents, and enjoyed watching the kids play with all of their new toys. Jacob was excited about all of his new Tennessee Vols stuff and his RC tank. Claire was all smiles when she got a new medical kit and lots of girly stuff, like hairbows and jewelry. Gifts are fun, but the best part about Christmas this year and always is spending time with each other and seeing the kids have so much fun. We are truly blessed.

 Time For Cake! | It's Party Time! | Happy 1st Birthday CJ! | CJ's 1st Birthday December 29, 2011

Parents' Day | On Parents' Day, Mom got to have lunch with Jacob at school and then was treated to a fun program in the classroom. Each student created a slide with clues about themselves. Then the parents had to guess who it was. After that, Mrs. White surprised the kids by putting their pictures on the screen again, but this time they had been edited to make them look silly. Everyone had good laugh. It was a fun afternoon! | January 20th, 2012

 3rd grade

Biography of an American Hero | Jacob wrote a biography of Mary Mcleod Bethune while studying democracy and the fight for the right to education | He also had to draw a picture for the cover, so he traced a photo of her and colored it in. 152: On February 9th, 2012, Jacob tested for his Level 3 Brown Belt in taekwondo. He performed very well! During sparring, he almost got kicked in the head a couple of times, but he blocked the kicks. It's fun to watch him progress through each level; he improves his accuracy and confidence every time. It's hard to believe he's been in taekwondo since the summer of 2007! We didn't make it to the awards ceremony this time, but Jacob did earn his next rank of Level 3 Brown Belt.

"Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself." -Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant | PRIDE | At Boynton, PRIDE stands for Positive Results in Dynamic Education. Its purpose is to encourage and promote students in loving and respecting themselves, others, and their school community. Each grading period, students who have demonstrated good character qualities, such as respect, honesty, and responsibility, are recognized at a special assembly. Claire was one of the honorees for the 3rd 9-weeks. We are so proud of her for being such a positive member of her school community! Way to go Claire! After each PRIDE member was introduced, they were treated to a front row seat for the special movie. | February 10th, 2012

On Valentine's Day, the kids had class parties at school. We spent the night before V-Day filling out tiny cards (paper airplanes and cute kittens) and attaching Kit-Kats and Hershey bars to them. Claire's class made 'mailboxes' out of cereal boxes and, along with all of their candy, everyone ate cupcakes, chips, and grapes for snack. Jacob's class had about the same thing for snack, but most of them used paper sacks for their Valentine cards. After school, the kids opened their Valentine's gifts at home. They each got Xbox point cards, cute stuffed monkeys, a book, and a ton of candy! They were so hyper! | Happy Day! | Valentines

At the end of the Upward season, an awards ceremony was held at the church. Gutsy the Flying Fox was there for entertainment and to share the Gospel through some funny skits. Even Nana was called up on stage to help out with one! Everyone was cheering as Gutsy performed slam dunks after jumping off a trampoline. Claire's cheer squad performed their cheers for the crowd, and Jacob was shocked when he was the lucky winner of the gift card and t-shirt! The whole Upward experience was great for all of us.

Some days they get to play other games, like Get That Trash Out of My Yard. Claire loves this game! She says, "We play with tiny balls and throw them on the other side of the gym as fast as we can. When Mrs. McKnight blows the whistle, we hold up all the balls, and whichever side has the most balls, they lose."

The gymnasts performed a very impressive routine on the parallel bars, and the motorcyclists inside the globe were awesome! Our favorite was the double hamster wheel. The performers were spinning so fast and even running and jump-roping on top of it. A few times, we held our breath thinking one of them might fall. The kids have to invent and create a contraption that will protect a raw egg from breaking during a 15 foot drop from the roof of the school. Jacob decided to "work smarter, not harder." He went with a nerf football, cut in half, and hollowed out just enough so that an egg could fit snuggly inside. He taped it back together with duct tape. It worked like a charm!

 May 2012

These pages are from a book that Claire made about her favorite memories from kindergarten. It was a great year for her. She made a lot of friends in her first year at Boynton; Anna, Allie, Sophie, Grayson, Gracie, and Kelsey were her best friends. Mom asked her if she had any friends who are boys. She just gave Mom that "Are you kidding me?" look and said "No!" Mom also asked her what was the craziest or funniest thing about kindergarten? She said "I am!! I always made my friends laugh by making silly faces!" (class clown, maybe?) Her favorite foods in the cafeteria were the "spicy" chicken, grapes, broccoli, and cherry juice pops. Her favorite class was math because she says she's "really good at it." She loved recess time the most though. Her least favorite time at school was computer lab because they "just had to sit there and play games the whole time. It was boring!" Kindergarten was a fun and productive year for Claire. Her teachers, Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Bell, were so sweet and really helped her improve, especially in reading and writing. She went from barely being able to sound out 3-letter words to reading beginner chapter books by the end of the year. Also, her writing became significantly more detailed, and her she began to understand that words need to be neat and have spaces between them to be read. At the end of the year, Mrs. Brown recommended Claire for the Horizon program, which she tested for in May and was accepted! | Claire in Kindergarten

Not only did we get to see Greg again after his 5-year hiatus, but we also got to chat with a few of the guys (and gals). It was bittersweet though, because 3 of the Wiggles retired after this tour. First we got to talk to Captain Feathersword (Paul Paddick). Then, we snapped a quick photo with 2 of the new Wiggles, Lachy and Emma. Next, we had a chat with Anthony. Then finally, after a long wait and a few raindrops, we got to talk to Greg. After Greg hurried onto the tour bus, the sky opened up. About This Mixbook

  • Title: A Year of Memories 2011-2012
  • This is the first family yearbook I've created. I plan to do one for each year, going back at least 10 years. This one took my 3 months to finish, so I don't think future books will be as long. I take A LOT of pictures, and last year I took way more than usual. This is definitely over the top, but it was a lot of fun to make!
